PULASKI, NY – The time honored tradition of athletic competition between students is a big part of the education of the students in Oswego County.
Unfortunately this tradition has been upended by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with some districts cancelling all athletic activities, and some allowing a limited season to carry on.
For student athletes anxious to compete and parents hoping for at least a modified opportunity for their offspring to play, a shortened season is available at some Oswego County Districts and COVID-19 notwithstanding, it’s game on.
“With the cooperation of our coaches, we have put together a season for our athletes,” said Pulaski Academy and Central Schools Athletic Director James Karcz. “It has been a challenge, but we are striving to provide a competitive arena and a sense of normalcy for our students.”
Holding sporting events while attempting to prevent the spread of the coronavirus requires modifications of both the field of play and the rules of the game. Karcz said the personal protection equipment constraints have adjustments to many aspects of the district’s sports programs.
“It’s great to be out playing, although wearing a mask is kind of uncomfortable,” said Pulaski Academy soccer player Abigayle Jordal.
Due to some districts not participating in the fall season, teams are being mixed in with schools that are usually competing in other leagues.
“We are playing against larger schools, so we are going up against more talented players, “ Jordal said. “It’s a little stressful, but it is still fun to be out on the field.”
One of the fall sports on Pulaski’s schedule this year is cross country, an event that is known for creating distance between its participants. After the mass start of a race, the runners usually spread out across the course and naturally create a space between competitors. Precautions must still be observed though, with runners wearing masks at times that social distancing may be difficult.
“We need to stay apart when our masks are off, but it’s still really fun,” said Pulaski High School junior Sean McGregor. “Other than that, the season is not too different.”
In an effort to limit the size of gatherings, meets are being kept to a smaller size.
“The smaller meets are a bit of a bummer, but I’m still really enjoying running and being able to compete,” McGregor said.
Karcz knows that many student athletes have a natural drive to compete, and that offering these kids some way to participate is very important.
“For some students, athletics are a huge motivation to attend school,” Karcz said. “We want to give them the opportunity to play if at all possible.”
As children grow older and approach graduation, cancelled seasons cause them to lose their eligibility to participate and learn from the experience.
“We hope to see them make the most of their window of opportunity to be student athletes,” Karcz said.
