Charlotte C. Finnegan, 76 09/07/2009

OSWEGO, NY – Charlotte C. Finnegan, 76, a resident of 17 E. Eighth St., passed away Monday Sept. 7, 2009, at her home, after a courageous struggle with cancer.

Charlotte was born in Oswego, the daughter of the late Moses and Frances (McHenry) Cortright.

She was a life resident.

She was the wife of the late Bernard “Bub” Finnegan, who died in 1975.

Prior to her retirement, she was, for many years, the owner and operator of the Ontario Grill on East Seneca Street.

She was a member of the VFW Post #5885 Women’s Auxiliary, and was a communicant of St. Paul’s Church.

Charlotte was in a clinical drug trial and was number 1 in stage 1 of the trial.

She volunteered to be in the trial, without hesitation, because she believed it might help someone else.

She is survived by her beloved friend, Jack Gaul of West Seneca, NY; four daughters, Karen (James) Decker of Greenville, NC, Frances (Harold) Borland of Oswego, Margaret (Peter) Tombolillo of Oswego and Bernice (William) Strother of Oswego; two sons, Bernard (Cindy) Finnegan of New Haven and Daniel (Chris) Finnegan of Minetto; three brothers, Carl Cortright and Edward Cortright, both of South Dayton, NY, and Francis Cortright of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Arlene Russo of Verona; 14 grandchildren, Kelsey and Andrew Decker, Bridget, Colleen, and Hal Borland, Michael, Kathleen, and Madeleine Tombolillo, Aaron and Jennifer Strother and “Pal” Bernie and Brian Finnegan, and Shannon and Daniel Finnegan; a sister-in-law, Margaret Finnegan Griffin; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Sissy.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Cortright; a sister, Margaret Carey; and a sister-in-law, Helena Cortright.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Paul’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Second St., Oswego.

The family would like to express for the love, support, and care that was provided to Charlotte and her family throughout her illness.

    We were so sorry to hear about your mother. Even after a long illness with an expected outcome, it is so final. At least she is at peace now, no more fighing and suffering. Hope you are doing ok. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  3. Your mom will never be forgotten. The times my parents spent at “Finnegans” will always be remembered. Bub & Charlotte will forever be in our families hearts.
    They truly made Oswego a better place.

    We are truly sorry for your loss. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
    Karen, I believe that I now know who to credit for your continued thoughtfulness and never ending concern for others and constant helping hand. You are truly selfless and it seems as if you had a very good teacher. May you remember all that was good and celebrate her life as well at this time. She truly did make a difference for the betterment of this world as reflected in her life accomplishments and in yourself.
