Dr. Richard Hyse, Ph.D. of Oswego, passed away Monday, November 9th, 2009 at home.
Born in Berlin, Germany, on June 19, 1920, Dr. Hyse was Professor Emeritus of Economics at SUNY Oswego. He was married to his loving wife, Josephine, for over 60 years.
Richard enrolled as a night student in the Baruch School of City College of New York, earning a degree in accounting as one of five magna cum laude graduates in that year’s class. He had previously been inducted in the business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma with then Mayor, Robert Wagner and City Treasurer, Abe Beam. On a state fellowship, Richard began doctoral studies in economics at New York University, where he conducted research on the European Economic Community.
In 1961 he joined the faculty at Oswego as the sole economist on campus. He chose to work at a state university because the State of New York helped him with his education. As a faculty adviser to the International Relations Club, he accompanied the Oswego team to the St. Lawrence Model Security Council in 1963.The team was named “Best Delegation.†He is a New York State Regents Fellow, NYU Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Omicron Delta Epsilon and Beta Gamma Sigma. Lastly, he was the author of Markets, Power and Wealth, a critique of microeconomics.
Richard enjoyed woodworking, reading, eating Jo’s cooking and completing the crossword puzzle in the New York Times. He was co-founder and volunteer treasurer for both the Children’s Center (25 years), and the Oswego Opera Theatre. He also served as treasurer of their condominium complex in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Surviving is his brother-in-law, Bert (Katherine) Lorell of Beverly Hills, California; a niece, Daryl (Jim) Kelehan (Marshalltown, IA); a nephew, Michael (Sandie) Loewenthal; a great-nephew, Michael Loewenthal, Jr., and a great-niece, Maggie Jo Kelehan.
There will be no calling hours and burial will be private. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
