PHOENIX, NY – Kenneth W. Sweet Sr., 84, of Phoenix, NY, passed away suddenly on Tuesday June 5, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, Syracuse.
Ken was born to his late parents, Mary (Wikoff) and Berton W. Sweet, on Aug. 16, 1933.
He was a graduate of Phoenix High School and a graduate of SUNY Morrisville.
He served in the US Army from 1953-55.
Ken was a business partner and monument dealer with his late cousin, Richard W. Sweet, for 45 years.
He was a true artist at designing and engraving granite cemetery monuments and grave markers.
Much of his fine work can be seen throughout CNY cemeteries and beyond.
Ken was extremely active in the Phoenix community and the surrounding area.
He belonged to many organizations, just to mention a few:
Ken was a member of Callimacus Masonic Lodge #369 A. & F. M., holding many offices; Shriners Ogranization Watertown; Phoenix Rural Cemetery Board of Directors; American Legion Post #418, Phoenix; Schroeppel Historical Society; the Maroun Elementary School “Canal Days” a 23-year participant along the NYS canal Lock 1 educational program; Historical Aircraft organization; former Boy Scout leader and Troop 720 committeeman; and a honorable member of Society of Cincinnati, founded in 1783.
Ken offered so much of his time, and possessed many skills and talents.
He had a vast knowledge of the history of Phoenix area.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Martha Mae Sweet, in 1960; a son, Daniel C. Sweet, in 1968; a brother, Peter T. Sweet, in 2011.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Esther (Wright) Sweet; his children, Kenneth W. (Donna) Sweet Jr., Caleb B. Sweet, Samuel W. Sweet and Ella Mae Sweet; his grandson, Ryan David Isabell; his step-brother, Robert Moyer; his step-sister, Nancy.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, 431 Main St., Phoenix.
A masonic service will follow at 4 p.m.in the funeral home with the members of the Callimacus Masonic Lodge #369, F. & A. M. of Phoenix.
The American flag will be presented to the family by the American Legion Post #418.
