George J. Cuppernull

George J. Cuppernull, age 95, passed away peacefully with family at his side, on Father’s Day, June 21, 2026 at the Bolivia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Bolivia, North Carolina.

George was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, veteran, educator, musician and friend. Throughout his long life, he touched countless people through his devotion to family, music, education, sports, faith, and community. Born on August 23, 1930, in Oswego, New York, George was the son of the late Ida (Brennan) and George Cuppernull. He grew up in Oswego and developed a lifelong love of music that would shape both his career and his personal life.

On November 7, 1953, he married the love of his life, M. Suzanne Keefe. They shared 62 years of marriage, raising a family and building a life centered on love, faith, and service to others. George was predeceased by Suzanne and by his brother, Ronald Cuppernull.

He is survived by his four children: Caren (Dr. Patrick) Lanigan of Southport, North Carolina; Michael (Jane) Cuppernull of Milford, Connecticut; Mark (Judy) Cuppernull of Seven Devils, North Carolina; and Christa (Peter) Phillips of West Newbury, Massachusetts.

He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Brendan (Shelly) Lanigan, Timothy Lanigan, and Erin Lanigan; Catherine (Alex Coutts) Cuppernull, Patrick (Fai Rogers) Cuppernull, Ryan (Caroline) Cuppernull, and Michael (Diva) Cuppernull; and Thomas (Katie James) Cuppernull and Peter (Caroline) Cuppernull. He was also blessed with two great-grandsons, Connor and Alexander Lanigan. One of his greatest joys was supporting the academic, athletic and musical endeavors of his grandchildren and attending as many of their events as possible.

A gifted woodwind instrumentalist, George played the clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and flute. Graduating from Oswego High School in 1948, he then earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and later received two Master’s degrees from Syracuse University, one in Music and one in Educational Administration. During the Korean War era, George proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was assigned to the 328th Army Band at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York, and later the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C. The bonds of friendship formed during music school and his army years remained strong throughout his life.

George devoted his professional life to music education. He taught instrumental music and directed bands at several high schools throughout upstate New York and on Long Island, inspiring many young musicians including his own children and grandchildren. He joined the faculty of SUNY Oswego and was named Professor Emeritus of Music upon his retirement in 1986. Remaining active in the profession post-retirement, he supervised music student teachers for SUNY Potsdam.

Music remained at the heart of George’s life from early on until long after his formal teaching career ended. He performed from age 14 with a local dance band in Oswego and was a familiar presence in the city’s summer band concert series for decades. In addition to performing, he served as conductor of that ensemble for many years, sharing his passion and leadership with fellow musicians and audiences alike. During his career he also guest conducted bands at numerous NY state school music festivals.

Beyond music, George found joy in many pursuits. He loved spending time with his family, caring for his pets, enjoying nature, reading, and camping. An avid follower of current events, he remained engaged with the news and public affairs until his final days. Also an athlete, he played basketball at both the high school and college levels. He was always willing to shoot baskets in the driveway or be the catcher behind the imaginary backyard home plate. The occasional tennis match or round of golf was also enjoyed. He followed the NY Yankees closely and remained an devoted fan of Syracuse University football and basketball.

George and Suzanne also shared a love of travel. Throughout their marriage they enjoyed visiting family and friends, and especially spending time with their grandchildren. Together they explored many destinations throughout the United States and Canada, wintered in Myrtle Beach, SC and created lasting memories on trips to Great Britain, Italy, Spain, and Ireland.

Among George’s happiest memories was the celebration of his 95th birthday on August 23, 2025, when his entire family gathered to honor him at his assisted living residence. Surrounded by those he loved most, the occasion reflected the deep bonds of family that meant so much to him.

George was a devoted parishioner of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Oswego, NY, and later St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown, NY. His faith guided him throughout his life and provided strength, comfort, and purpose. His legacy lives on in the students he taught, the musicians he inspired, and the family he loved so dearly.

Calling hours will be held at the Dowdle Funeral Home Sunday, July 12 from 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Christ the Good Shepard Catholic Church, Oswego on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 11:30 a.m., with interment to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. George will be laid to rest beside his wife, Suzanne.
