Drafted into the US Army in 1943, Fred landed on D-Day with the 4th Infantry on Utah Beach, earning two Bronze Stars and several other medals for heroic service in five major European campaigns, culminating with the Battle of the Bulge.

Fred married Grace Wellwood on June 5, 1949, and resided in Southwest Oswego, where they raised four children and were happily married for 56 years, until Grace passed away in 2005.

Fred purchased his own grocery store in Southwest Oswego (where Ontario Orchards is now) in 1949 and worked there for 11 years; worked 10 years in food service at SUNY Oswego; then worked for the county as the administrator of Michaud Nursing Home in Fulton until retiring.

He enjoyed work and looked forward to each new day.

Fred was active in Oswego Town government, serving as Clerk, Supervisor, and Assessor.

He also served as a Trustee, then as President of the Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal.

Fred was a member of Oswego Alliance Church where he had served the congregation through various ministries.

Fred was active in sports since a boy, playing baseball on Hannibal’s team for many years, and then playing softball on Oswego teams.

In later years he enjoyed taking part in the yearly Hannibal Old-Timers’ games and umpiring softball games for Oswego leagues.

While working at SUNY Oswego, Fred played and organized “pick-up” basketball games, which became known as “Freddy-Ball,” after their organizer.

Even at age 50, it was well known that Fred could out-play the younger men!
