OSWEGO – Virginia E. Worfolk, of Scriba NY, was born in Bayonne, New Jersey on May 31, 1919. She passed away into the Lord’s care on February 17, 2025, at the age of 105.
Virginia graduated from Bayonne High School and began a career in banking. In 1941, she married John W. Worfolk (1918-1970) who was a career Chief Radio Operator with the US Coast Guard. Their daughter Lee (1944) and son William (1949) traveled with them to Ketechehan Alaska in 1951, where John contracted polio and was thereafter discharged due to disability. The family then resided in Hillsdale, NJ, where Virginia worked for Borrogh’s Corp. for 30 years as a Senior Accountant. At this time, she obtained an AA degree in Library Science from St. Alfonso Jr. College (just because).
During her lifetime, Virginia was always active in the Methodist Church, first in Hillsdale NJ, and then in Lycoming NY. She taught Sunday School, Bible School, and Adult Bible Studies over the years. She traveled throughout most of the United States and many foreign countries. Virginia was a member of the New Haven Senior Citizens, an avid reader, and a crossword puzzle completor. She sewed, crocheted, baked, and maintained a sense of humor throughout her life. She also loved watching her backyard birds.
In addition to her daughter and son, she will be greatly missed by her three grandsons Chris, Tim (Bonnie) and Bill (Allison), five great-grandchildren, Karsten, Annika, Marina, Will, and Wes, and four special nieces and their families.
Virginia lived an independent life for 105 years which she attributed to eating chocolate and keeping a smile.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lycoming United Methodist Church, PO Box 51, Lycoming, New York 13093. The family thanks the staff of the Manor at Seneca Hills for their concern, care, and their love of listening to “her stories”.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Lycoming United Methodist Church, with a light reception to follow in the church hall. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
