OSWEGO, NY – Frederick H. Thurston, 93, of Oswego, passed away Monday May 26, 2014.
Fred was born in Oswego on September 10, 1920, the son of the late Frederick and Anna (Faid) Thurston.
He was a life resident, and attended St. Mary’s School and Oswego High School.
He was a World War II veteran of the US Army, and served in the Pacific Ocean with Company D.
Before leaving for the war, he met and married Blanche (Dempsey) in Piedmont, Alabama. They had 70 years of marriage until Blanche’s death in 2012.
Prior to his retirement at age 62, he was employed, for many years, at the New York State Armory in Oswego.
He had also worked at Hancock Air Field in Syracuse.
He enjoyed many years of retirement. He was and avid New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed fishing.
Most of all, he loved his family and all the family gatherings, where he loved sharing his stories.
He was also an avid cribbage player, and taught all the family how to play.
He was a communicant of St. Paul’s Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Dian Paura-Chellis of Warners, Susan (Harold “Pudge”) Batchelor of Oswego and Alesia (Dennis “Oly”) Johnson of Oswego; a sister, Alice Fetterly of Boonville; three grandchildren, Brenda Stevens, Robert Paura and Jeffrey (Lesley) Wallace; seven great-grandchildren, Christopher (Candace) Baker, Rhianna (Brian) Elkie, Kayleigh Stevens, Nikki Paura, Jennifer Paura, Thomas Wallace and Riley Wallace; three great-great-grandchildren, Aurora, Cassandra and Isaac Baker; and several nieces and nephews in the south and locally.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by siblings Joseph Thurston, Lenore Gibson and Mary Trickler.
His family would like to give a special thank you to his home care ladies and special neighbors, as well as to Dr. Varnum and his staff.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, in St. Paul’s Church.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Second St., Oswego.
