Joseph G. Familo, 91

OSWEGO, NY – Joseph G. Familo, 91, of Oswego, died peacefully Monday August 24, 2015, at Oswego Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Samuel and Esther (Pasciutto) Familo.

Joe was the beloved father of Lillian (George) Howell of Fort Myers, Fla., Irene (David) Ford of Oswego and Florida, John (Patty) Familo of Oswego, Samuel (Sue) Familo of Fulton, Dorothy (David) Hamm of Oswego and Alice (Bill) Scott of Sterling.

He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; his sisters, Genevieve Loughrey of Oswego and Marie Bellow of Florida.

He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Samuels of Oswego.

In addition to his family, Joe will be greatly missed by his companion, Arlene DiBello of Oswego.

Joe graduated from Oswego High School and was a World War II veteran of the US Army.

He worked for an accountant for many local businesses including Papertronics, Hammermill and Rudy’s.

In his retirement, Joe became an avid runner and was very proud to have completed 19 marathons between the ages of 75 and 80.

He enjoyed gardening, the beach and any activity out of doors.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.

  1. Sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. I’d like to think there is a runners’ heaven and Joe is up there right now training for his next marathon. He leaves behind a lot of friends and happy memories.

  2. What an interesting man to talk to. He had an excellent sense of humor and some interesting adventures such as entering Japan right after WWII ended.
    I know I will miss him.
