OSWEGO, NY – Judge John P. Chwalek, 88, a resident of Oswego, passed away Friday April 20, 2012, at Oswego Hospital.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late John and Katherine (Sudol) Chwalek.
Mr. Chwalek was a U.S. Army veteran and served during World War II in the Pacific.
He graduated from Syracuse University with a BA in 1948 and graduated from St. John’s University Law School in 1950.
He began practicing law with Herald H. Andursky, a prominent Oswego trial lawyer.
He opened his own office in 1963 and practiced law in Oswego until 1980, when he received an appointment as a Federal Administrative Law Judge.
John traveled extensively through out the U.S. and Puerto Rico, hearing appeals in Social Security matters.
He maintained residence in Oswego.
He served as a city clerk in the Iles administration and as a city attorney in the Fitzgibbons administration.
John served on the Oswego Water Board and the Municipal Civil Service Commission.
He served as city judge from 1974-1980 and was also an assistant District Attorney.
He was a former president of the Oswego Rotary Club, member of the board of directors of Catholic Charities and the Newman Foundation.
He was also a Knight of Christ the King Retreat House and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Oswego County Bar Association.
John was parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church where he was a trustee for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Spath) Chwalek; two daughters, Mary Kay (James) Pagano and Ann (Andrew) Chwalek; three sons, Paul Chwalek, Thomas (Judy) Chwalek and James (Sujatha) Chwalek; 12 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen’s Church, Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Stephen’s Building Fund, 138 Niagara St., Oswego.
