OSWEGO, NY – Michael G. Regan, 51, passed away unexpectedly in his New York City home on Tuesday February 3, 2015.
He is survived by his parents, Frank and Mary Regan; his siblings, Deborah, Mark (Janine), Jeff (Denise) and Cathy (George) Broadwell; several nieces and nephews; as well as many friends scattered throughout the United States and abroad.
Born on April 20, 1963, in Omaha, Nebraska, Michael had lived in New York City since 1992.
A lover of contemporary art and photography, he spent many years traveling in Europe after graduating from Binghamton University.
During this time he lived primarily in pre-unification Berlin, where he worked at a US military base.
Upon returning to the states, he put to good use his skills as a world traveler in his first career as a travel agent.
Living in New York allowed Michael to indulge in his deep love for the arts, photography and film.
He became a collector of prints and art books, successfully anticipating the increase in market value of items by artists such as Bruce Weber and Larry Clark.
His friends knew him as a knowledgeable and savvy gallery goer, always seeking out the new and interesting.
During the last decade of his life, Michael worked as a studio manager and photo editor at a boutique branding and design firm based in Brooklyn.
One of the pleasures of his job was the opportunity to work closely with a number of commercial and fine art photographers and publishing clients.
But perhaps his greatest pleasure in recent years was walking in Central Park, which was just a couple of minutes from his front door, allowing him to visit nearly every day and treat it as his virtual backyard.
Accordingly, he was justifiably proud to have been one of the volunteers who installed and maintained The Gates, the massive and historic site-specific work in the park by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
A funeral service will be held in Michael’s hometown on February 21 at noon at the Church of the Resurrection, in Oswego.
A calling hour will precede the service at 11 a.m. at the church.
A portion of Michael’s ashes will be brought back to New York City and will be scattered during a memorial to be announced at a later date.
