OSWEGO, NY – William A. Mahon, MD, 62, a resident of 77 Murray St. Oswego, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Mahon was born in the Bronx, the son of the late William A. and Mary E. McDermott Mahon.
He was the husband of Margaret (Meg) McNally Mahon.
Dr. Mahon was a well-known orthopedic surgeon in Oswego for 32 years.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister for many years.
Dr. Mahon graduated from Chaminade High School, Mineola, NY, in 1967 and LeMoyne College in 1971.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1975. Following graduation he completed his residency at the Akron City Hospital, serving as chief resident in his final year. He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. Mahon moved to Oswego with his family in 1980 and immediately immersed himself in the community.
He coached and umpired little league and volunteered with youth soccer for many years. For more than three decades, Dr. Mahon served as the team physician for the Oswego State men’s hockey team, a tenure that included one national championship.
Dr. Mahon pursued nearly everything he did with enthusiastic determination and devotion, whether caring for his patients, playing tennis and racquetball with friends and family, or working in his yard.
Nothing gave Dr. Mahon more joy than spending time with his family. To his three children, Dr. Mahon passed on his faith, his love of the Yankees, Rangers and Giants, and the knowledge that there is nothing more important than family.
Dr. Mahon is survived by daughters, Katherine of New York, NY, and Maureen (Jonathan) Japha of Washington, DC; a son, Daniel William of Arlington, Va.; brother, Gerard P. Mahon of Manlius, NY; sister, Patricia Mahon Krajeski of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; grandson, Henry Isaac Japha; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Mary M. Smyth.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Oswego.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Mahon passing. My prayers and thoughts are with the Mahon family. He was a wonderful person and will be missed by all.
Few leave a legacy of kindness and a gentle touch as did Dr. Mahon when dealing with his patients. Our daughter wasn’t afraid to have her knee looked at in hs, and he ‘cured’ my husband’s carpel tunnel a few years later. So sad to hear of one so young passing away from us too soon!

REPLACEMENT SURGERY — IN 2008. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.
While visiting Oswego in 2008 from Houston, I fell and broke both my leg and ankle at Fort Ontario. I was concerned with the surgery being done in Oswego – it being a small city. Dr. Mahon did the surgery that day. Upon returning home, I visited one of the top orthopedic surgeons in Houston. He said of “The worst break he had seen in 25 years” that it was a miracle that I was ever to walk again. The funniest part though was that he was a Doctor of Jewish faith and stated that “God himself could not have done a better job.”

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Mahon’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to Meg and family! Such a nice man, and much too young and talented to be taken from those he loved, and all those who knew him or had yet to meet him.
