Howard G. Christensen, 82

OSWEGO, NY – Howard G. Christensen, 82, a longtime resident of Fulton and Oswego passed away peacefully Tuesday November 21, 2017, at Morningstar Nursing Care Facility, Oswego.

He was born at the Norwegian Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, in 1935 to the late Howard and Mabel Christensen.

Mr. Christensen attended kindergarten in 1940 at PS127, Brooklyn, where he met his future wife, Marilyn Miller.

He later graduated from Fort Hamilton High School.

Mr. Christensen entered the United States Navy in 1952.

In 1953, Howard convinced Marilyn to marry him 13 years after their first meeting and the ceremony was performed at the chapel on the Naval Base in Key West, Fla.

He remained in the Navy as a sonar man 2nd Class until 1956 when he was honorably discharged.

Mr. Christensen retired from the New York State Police.

He served as a trooper from 1962-83 working in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation as a senior investigator which included several undercover assignments.

Mr. Christensen began working with Niagara Mohawk in 1983 at Nine Mile where he was named manager of nuclear security in 1994.

He later retired in 2001.

Mr. Christensen is survived by his wife, Marilyn Christensen of Oswego; and their four children: Dorene (William) Hiestand of Virginia, Cheryl Ballou of Oswego, Russell Christensen of New Haven, NY, and Gregory (Katherine) Christensen of Oregon; eight grandchildren: Alexander and Madeleine Hiestand, Collin, Ashley and Caitlyn Ballou, Noah Christensen, Daniel and Andrew Christensen; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be held privately.

The Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego, has care of the arrangement.

  1. Deepest sympathy to the family. Howie was a great guy. He was a friend to the Fulton PD and later I worked with and for him at Nine Mile Point. Very sorry to learn of his passing.

  2. Really one of the good guys, a great teacher and mentor to young Troopers. Will always remember his compassion at a snowmobile accident on Oneida Lake, taught me a lot. My condolences to the family. RIP my friend.
