John G. Barker Sr., 76

OSWEGO, NY – John G. Barker Sr., 76, of Scriba, died Sunday May 8, 2016, at his home with his family at his side.

Mr. Barker was born in Oswego, the son of the late Charles and Irma (Poli) Barker.

Mr. Barker served in the United States Army, during Desert Storm and the National Guard.

He retired from Alcan after more than 33 years of service, working in many positions at the company.

Later he worked at Leon Shapiro Motors in Oswego.

Mr. Barker was a member of the Mexico VFW and the Elks.

He was an avid race fan, and worked at several NASCAR tracks.

He was very proud to be the crew chief for his son’s and grandson’s race team.

He was a very active grandfather and enjoyed helping with and attending all of the grandchildren’s many activities and sporting events.

He is survived by his loving children, John (Sharon) Barker Jr. of Granby, James Barker of New Haven, Julia (William) Johnson of Oswego Town and Jennifer (Michael) Ariola of New Haven; and his sister, Adelaide “Addie” Kells of Scriba.

He is the proud grandfather of Alecia (Greg) Metz, Gynnelle (Andrew) Ekberg, Zachary Johnson, Jillian (Ryan) Pitcher, Michael (Lynnette West) Ariola, Shawn Ariola, Corey John (Taylor Whipple) Barker; and great-grandchildren Hudson, Everleigh, Maverick, Alex, Christian, Liannah and Vincent.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, Oswego.

Burial will the Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.

Calling will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego.

  1. Though we had not seen each other in a few years John and I go back a long way from Alcan to our parallel career in the military, he in the Guard and me in the Reserves. I salute you my friend and will see you in that formation on the other side.

  8. RIP John. It was privilege to serve in the NY Army National Guard with you. You were a great friend, mentor and always had good words of encouragement just like a Dad to me. and not to mention always had a hug in there too. I will always cherish them memories in the mess hall doing kp the food was always great with you in charge. and Even the times you were in the First Sargent slot …Guard is Family. Rest easy now soldier.
