Cancer Screening is Too Important to Lose

Dear Editor,

The New York State Department of Health leads statewide efforts to prevent or catch cancer at its earliest stage. It’s cornerstone initiative, the Cancer Services Program (CSP), offers free breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening to New Yorkers who lack health insurance. Your local program, administered by Oswego County Opportunities Inc.’s (OCO) CSP of the North Country, is part of a network of programs serving every county and borough of New York.

In the last program year, nearly 27,000 uninsured New Yorkers got cancer screening through the CSP. Of these, 5,800 people got further testing to find out if they did or did not have cancer.  The CSP helped those who needed it get free or low-cost cancer treatment. Many of those who were screened will depend on these services again in the coming years.

There are an estimated 140,000 people in New York State right now who are eligible for the CSP. There may soon be more. With cancer being the second leading cause of death in New York State, the CSP must continue to provide these essential services and reach all of those who need them.

OCO’s Cancer Services Program welcomes partnerships with organizations and leaders who serve their community. Feel free to contact us for more information about this life-saving program and how we can help you help others!

Make OCO’s CSP your partner in cancer prevention and early detection. Call us at 315-592-0830.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Handville
