Community Support for Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program

When I was a child I traveled with my family to the 1000 Islands region in the summers, by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway Trail. My grandfather used to sing to us as we drove down the long hill to the 5-corners intersection – “Os-we-go into the wild blue yonder, Os-we-go into the sea!” A couple times we were lucky enough to stop for breakfast at the diner where Scoops is now. Great memories – I had no idea I would one day come to call Oswego ‘my community’.
Tucked away on W. 1st St is The Cellar Door – a modest little gem of a craft-brew bar and eatery over-flowing with that feel-good ‘community’ atmosphere. It felt like walking into a friends & family get-together on Thursday evening April 11, when they hosted a Trivia Night (usually held Wednesdays). The owner advertised that this Trivia Night they would donate the player’s fees to benefit SAF (Services to Aid Families), Oswego County’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault advocacy program.
Community is a ‘feeling of fellowship’ – and that feeling was loud and clear at Trivia Night last night. Folks were excited to play trivia – hosted by Mercedes, a favorite bartender (also a victim advocate), but they were equally interested to understand and show support for SAF and the much-needed work this program does in our community. At The Cellar Door last night that ‘community’ feel was most-humbly driven home by the immense kindness of Tom and The Cellar Door staff, the care and engagement of the many trivia players, the rallying of advocates, and lastly by an unexpected independent, generous and anonymous gift to SAF.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness month – and the Oswego community showed up loud and proud! I could not be more impressed or grateful!
