To The Editor:
The proposed 2016-2017 Oswego school budget of $79,510,611 is the amount of money that the Oswego City School District can afford.
Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul is no longer an option; Peter has run out of money!!
Voting this budget down will not restore any of the cuts involved to reach this budget number, in fact, a defeated budget will result in even deeper cuts not to mention a higher tax bill.
Let’s be logical, it’s most unfortunate for jobs to be lost, lives turned upside down, programs cut, and however, realistically it is long overdue given the amount of income versus expense.
The losses are heartbreaking yes, so let’s mourn and grieve but we must move forward.
Vote with your head not your heart, we are voting on a number not what takes place inside that number.
Finally, a budget that doesn’t borrow money, it’s a no brainer, VOTE YES!!

I am voting no because I would like further cuts to enable a reversal of last year’s 10% tax increase. What Fran Hoefer said at the candidates forum was correct. This year the community will be slammed with a 12.5% tax increase because last year’s 10% increase will not be reimbursed through STAR this year. The taxes in this community are out of control. Please vote no and restore some fiscal sanity to this school system. The budget is entirely too high and needs further cuts.
Vote NO.Why would I vote for a tax increase when MY children have lost the sports they love?If the athletics are not in the budget then the vote is NO
I agree with both of you – something needs to be done in this city and if it has to start with the schools with a NO vote then a NO vote it is. Taxes and the water / sewer bill are out of control. I have family in other states with houses valued at 5X what my house is valued at and their property taxes are far less…….
I no longer live in Oswego, but I have to say the cuts in the sports is very sad, my niece is in high school and the cuts to sports programs are absolutely ridiculous. Cut the coaches salaries down, cut the administartors pay, you are in the business of helping kids and with cutting the activities that they love and work at, who are you really helping? Offer the coaches a salary of $500 per sport, you will get the coaches that REALLY want to coach and are not in it for the paycheck, heck the results may even improve. Think of the money that you will free up and that can be put right back towards what it should be THE KIDS….THE STUDENTS…THE FUTURE OF OSWEGO.
