Oswego River report:
The water level has dropped a bit flowing at 20,600cfs this morning. This level makes it very difficult to fish along the river. When conditions settle down, look for steelhead and brown trout activity throughout the river.
The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. For more information, view the Oswego County Tourism web site at www.visitoswegocounty.com and look for the fishing report along the top bar on the home page. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its “Loaner For Life” program. For more information contact the fire station, 35 E. Cayuga St., at 315-343-2161.
Salmon River report:
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
It was quiet on the run yesterday with no anglers out. As for weather conditions, we have no snow on the ground, flows at the dam have been lowered to 1750cfs and there is limited precipitation forecasted for the next five days. Hopefully the flows will continue to drop.
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
On Monday the warmest part of the day was in the morning with the temperature in the 50s along with scattered rain showers. The temperature continued to drop throughout the day with very high winds and by the afternoon the thermometer was reading in the 30s. The few anglers we spoke with reported having a slow day in the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville with just a couple of hook ups.
Oneida Lake report:
With the warm temperatures over the weekend and the stiff winds we had over the last 24 hours, reports are indicating very different conditions – open water, ice pulled far away from shore, ice piled up on shore. Although we have colder temperatures for a few days, the forecast is calling for high winds again tomorrow.
Sandy Pond report:
There is still ice on the pond with 6-8 inches in many areas. With the warmer temperatures over the weekend there are areas where the ice has separated from shore and gas holes. With the up and down temperatures use caution and check the ice as you venture out. Anglers are finding perch, pike, crappies and an occasional walleye.
Winter Trails Report
Snowmobiling:
Clubs in the county report their trails are closed or in poor condition. We again had very warm temperatures on Sunday which likely ruined any trails in the northern part of the county that may have had some snow. Temperatures dropped yesterday with some precipitation – likely snow – expected Tuesday night and Wednesday but we will have to see how this plays out.
Cross Country Skiing:
According to Hugh Quinn of the Osceola Tug Hill Ski Club:
A dusting of snow overnight and a winter advisory with 3-6 inches of snow predicted through Wednesday afternoon. We have survived the weekend warmup and rain Monday morning. Our base is 2-5 inches and currently a combination of frozen/loose granular snow. Weather for the weekend looks very nice. The open field where the sun hits all the time especially at our trailhead is thin and slick. After you get in the woods the coverage is much better.
