Fishing Reports for March 11, 2016

This report courtesy of the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Oswego River report:
With the rain yesterday the water level has risen to 16,100cfs this afternoon. This is still high for shore fishing but driftboats are enjoying some productive days. The weekend looks warm with no precipitation. When conditions settle down, look for steelhead and brown trout using egg sacs and beads.

The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. For more information, view the Oswego County Tourism web site at www.visitoswegocounty.com and look for the fishing report along the top bar on the home page. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its “Loaner For Life” program. For more information contact the fire station, 35 E. Cayuga St., at 315-343-2161.

Salmon River report:
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Yesterday was a soggy day on the run. Steady rain fell the entire day. The release at the dam remains at 1700cfs but with all the runoff flows are on the rise. The Pineville gauge is reading 2600cfs. One angler spent the entire day on the run without any luck bringing a fish to hand. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm through the weekend.

According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
On Thursday we had mild conditions with rain all day and the temperature was in the 60’s. Today we will have cool and dry conditions, but very mild and dry for the upcoming weekend. Keep in mind that with the recent rain and melting snow coming off the Tug Hill we’re getting significant runoff on both the main river and smaller tributaries. Yesterday the couple anglers we spoke with reported hooking into a few fish in Altmar but didn’t land them.

Oneida Lake report:
With the warm temperatures we have been having and the extended forecast calling for more of the same, it is time to think open water season.

Sandy Pond report:
The warm temperatures have ended the ice fishing season.

Winter Trails Report
Due to the unusually warm weather and lack of snow we have experienced in the last few weeks, the winter trail report has ended for the season. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to being with you again next season.
