Oswego River report:
The water level was up to 11,500cfs over the weekend but has dropped back to 8,710cfs as of this morning.
According to Capt. Kevin Davis of Catch the Drift:
The Oswego River remains day to day; we just need some warmer weather. It looks like Mother Nature will cooperate as Thursday and Friday are expected to be near 50 degrees. Our clients have worked a bit harder for them, but we have had some nice quality fish coming to the boat. All released to fight another day.
The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. The Oswego Fire Department offers loaner life jackets at no charge through its “Loaner For Life” program. For more information contact the fire station, 35 E. Cayuga St., at 315-343-2161.
Salmon River report:
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Over the weekend, we had anglers fishing the very bottom at the Spring Hole all the way up to the Little Black Hole. At the Spring Hole one lucky angler landed one of four steelhead, drifting a sucker spawn pattern.
Another angler fishing the Wall Hole and then the tail end of the Flats scored 100% with two steelhead and a nice 8 pound river brown drifting egg sacs under a thing-a-ma-jig float. The angler fishing the upper stretch of the property hooked two “very large” steelhead while drifting nymphs. Fishing has definitely picked up over the last week so cure that cabin fever with some spring medicine, come out and enjoy.
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
Over the weekend we had heavy fishing pressure in the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville. We spoke with a couple anglers who fished the lower end of the river and landed some steelhead on egg patterns while fly fishing and egg sacs while bottom bouncing. The advantage to fly fishing this time of year is that several different techniques produce results, such as high stick nymphing, fishing with a strike indicator or swinging flies with sinking leaders. With the low, clear water conditions the fish get a long slow look at your presentation, so a fluorocarbon leader or tippet is suggested. Anglers who are bottom bouncing or float fishing have had results with blue or pink egg sacs, steelhead beads, pink worms and steelhead jigs.
Oneida Lake report:
Anglers over the weekend reported good conditions with less wind than we have experienced. With the sun, the top softened and in some areas creepers were helpful. Temperatures by Thursday will be on the climb reaching about 50 degrees. Conditions can change quickly as it gets warmer so use caution. Areas around open water such as streams and culverts, along the shoreline and pressure cracks can become unsafe. Indications are there has been a perch bite with a number of small ones but a few decent sized ones in the group. Just a reminder that walleye season closed on March 15.
Sandy Pond report:

The pond does still have ice but warmer temperatures are on their way for later in the week. Conditions will be changing so use caution. Anglers are reporting a decent bite near the Elm’s. Crappies have been active at night and there has been a light perch bite. Reports indicate there are a lot of small ones being caught but there are some nice ones in the mix.
Winter Trail Report
Our winter trail report has ended for the season. We have enjoyed a great season but with recent rain and some warmer temperatures the trails are deteriorating and most of our trails are closing. We appreciate your interest and look forward to being with you again next winter.
