Norma Cooney, MD named Medical Director of Emergency Services at Oswego Hospital

Norma L. Cooney, MD, has been named Medical Director of Emergency Services at Oswego Hospital.

Dr. Cooney officially began her new position at Oswego Hospital’s completely renovated emergency room on July 1, and arrives with extensive experience. Most recently, she had been an emergency room physician at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica. At Upstate medical University, she also served as an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Upstate Medical University.

Dr. Cooney said she was excited to start her new position at Oswego Hospital. “I am looking forward to becoming a part of a health system that is growing and has leadership with wonderful vision,” she said.

Dr. Cooney completed her medical training at Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center College of Medicine. She fulfilled her residency at Texas A&M’s Scott and White Hospital. She is board certified in emergency medicine, as well as undersea and hyperbaric medicine.

The new medical director said she selected emergency medicine as her field of study as it gives her the opportunity to care for residents of all ages, from those very young to the very old. ”Every day is different, and because of the care I provide, I am able to develop close relationships quickly with my patients, which I enjoy.”

Along with providing care in an emergency room setting, Dr. Cooney has an interest in hyperbaric medicine and wound healing. She is Vice-President of the northeast chapter of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a method used to heal multiple conditions including chronic problematic wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning and radiation injuries in cancer patients. The patient is placed in a specially-designed chamber that administers 100 percent oxygen under slight pressure.

Dr. Cooney has also served as a member of Upstate Medical University’s Medical Executive Board and on the Corporate Board of Upstate Emergency Medicine, Inc.

Oswego Health Vice President for Medical Affairs Renato Mandanas, MD, said Dr. Cooney brings a wealth of emergency room care and knowledge to Oswego Hospital. “I think our emergency room patients will find her well versed on delivering high quality emergency room care,” Dr. Mandanas said. “She also brings much enthusiasm and a commitment to teamwork.”
