Assemblyman Will Barclay Announces Annual Summer Reading Challenge

Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski) is encouraging young readers to take part in his annual Summer Reading Challenge, a program designed to keep students engaged and learning while school is out for the summer. The challenge invites students to read for at least 15 minutes a day over a minimum of 40 days during July and August. Students who complete the program will receive an Excellence in Reading certificate in recognition of their achievement.

“With technology and distractions exponentially on the rise, it’s more important than ever to encourage children to read and maintain the skills they develop during the school year,” said Barclay. “The habits they develop over the summer play a large role in preparing them for a strong start when they return to the classroom and continue building on their comprehension skills.”

The latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows reading proficiency remains a challenge for students nationwide, reinforcing the importance of encouraging children to read throughout the summer to help maintain and strengthen literacy skills. The summer reading program provides families with a simple way to help students build confidence and return to school ready to learn.

Assemblyman Barclay’s summer reading party will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26. To download a reading journal or learn more about the Summer Reading Challenge, visit the New York State Assembly website.
