U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer today announced he will bring the Social Security Fairness Act to the Senate floor next week. Schumer said the House-passed bipartisan legislation will expand benefits for NY’s hardworking firefighters, teachers, police and other workers and increase retirement payments for 2.5 million Americans, including 35,000 New Yorkers.
“Next week, the Senate will take up the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act to ensure New Yorkers, and all Americans, are not denied their well-earned Social Security benefits, simply because they chose at some point to work in public service. This bill means 35,000 New York firefighters, teachers, police officers and so many more can receive the hard-earned Social Security benefits they deserve,” said Senator Schumer. “The House already passed this bill, and this is a chance for senators to do the right thing for our public servants. I’m ready to act on this much-needed fix to protect Social Security benefits for millions of retirees across America.”
Schumer explained that the Social Security Fairness Act will repeal two harmful provisions that reduce social security benefits. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).
The WEP reduces social security benefits of workers who also receive pensions from a federal, state, or local government for employment not covered by Social Security. The GPO reduces Social Security spousal or survivor benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also receive pensions from a federal, state, or local government for employment not covered by Social Security. Repealing these two provisions will increase payments for approximately 2.5 million Social Security beneficiaries across the country, including 35,000 here in NY.
