Hannibal’s modified girls soccer team found a win and a solid game at the end of their rainbow this week.
On Tuesday, the modified Lady Warriors beat Cato-Meridian, 3-0. Brooke Wiggins broke a scoreless tie after halftime with a breakaway goal. In the fourth quarter, Wiggins executed a nifty cross to Kailee Esposito, who put it in the back of the net. And Gabby Griffin sealed the win with a breakaway goal in the fourth quarter.
On Thursday, Hannibal and a much larger Jordan-Elbridge team squared off in the rain and mud. J-E dominated the first two quarters, said coach Sharon Nihoff, but Hannibal kept them out of the net to preserve a halftime tie at zero. It stayed that way until the Eagles scored at the end of the third quarter, then took advantage of a couple of what Nihoff called defensive breakdowns to score two more times. Amanda Beginski put the Lady Warriors on the board with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter on an assist from Esposito. The fifth quarter (modified teams play five quarters to allow all players to play) was scoreless, but ended with what Nihoff described as a double rainbow over the field.
“Both teams played well despite the wet, soggy field and the pouring rain throughout the game,” she said.
