FULTON, NY – Fulton City School District Athletic Director, Christopher Ells recently spoke to the Board of Education on the success of all Varsity and JV winter sports programs finishing with numerous honors and distinctions across all teams.
Ten varsity programs with a total of 153 athletes placed four NYS scholar athlete teams, six teams with members with All-League honors, 2 Coach of the Year recipients, ample individual awards and championship and tournament wins.
Combined with 41 athletes on four JV teams and 118 athletes on seven modified teams, the total athletics program wielded 312 participants throughout all winter sports programs that ran from November 1, 2015 through March 6, 2016.
“This has been a very successful winter season,” said Ells. “I think the best one I’ve had in the past six years.”
One of the most recognized winter sports this season belonged to the varsity boys basketball team led by head coach, Matt Kimpland.
The team finished with a 14-8 record, ending their season with a second round loss in sectionals.
However, senior Cody Green made history as he became the second male player in school history to reach the 1,000 point club. Green ended the season with 1,228 career points, a first team All League honoree and became the first FCSD athlete to be recognized by News Channel 9 as Athlete of the Week.
Senior, Tyler Lee also finished the season as a second team All League honoree.
The varsity girls basketball team, led by head coach Derek Lyons similarly ended their season in the second round of sectionals with a 14-8 record.
The team finished as a NYS Scholar Athlete Team and recognized sophomore Nicole Hansen as first team All League honoree, junior Sydney Gilmore as a second team All League honoree and senior Emilee Hyde as an All League honorable mention.
The varsity cheerleading team, composed of 13 athletes, cheered on their fellow basketball teams while also competing in five competitions throughout the season.
Of these competitions, G. Ray Bodley and the varsity cheerleaders hosted the fourth annual Love to Cheer tournament in which 28 different teams with 325 total cheerleaders competed.
The varsity squad took second place in the Sun Showdown Competition.
The varsity bowling team coached by Mike Tryniski won the Class B title for the sixth year in a row as well as the OSHL Freedom American League title.
Kyle Denson competed on the Section III All Star Team in the NYSPHSAA Championship where he finished sixth out of 66 bowlers, and also ended the season as a first team All League honoree.
Lucas Clark and Bradley Martin finished the season as a second team All League honorees.
Megan Guernsey competed on the Section III All Star team in the NYSPHSAA championship where she finished 20th out of 66 bowlers and also finished the season as a first team All League honoree.
Zoe June also finished the season as a first team All League honoree and Emily Gerth finished as a second team All League honoree.
Ells said the varsity boys ice hockey team got off to a slow start in the season with a 1-8 record, but then turned around to go on a winning run and finish the season with an overall record of 9-10-1 after ending their season with a first round loss in sectionals.
The team placed as a NYS Scholar Athlete Team with junior Spencer Evans earning first team All League honors as well as being named Pall Times Athlete of the Week. Junior, Rocco Cannatoa also earned first team All League honors and senior Stan Kubis earned second team All League honors.
In his first year as coach, Jason Heindorf was named Coach of the Year for the D1 American Conference.
The varsity hockey team was composed of students from Fulton, Phoenix, Red Creek and Central Square.
“We really made sure every kid had the opportunity to play hockey, no matter where they went to school,” said Ells.
The varsity swimming team led by head coach, Shane Lacey was composed of 33 athletes and placed as a NYS Scholar Athlete team.
Senior swim team member, Tim McAfee earned first team All League honors and Ells said, “every swimmer’s time went down from the beginning of the season.”
The Fulton varsity wrestling team also held a notable season. With 26 total wrestlers the team finished the season as a NYS scholar athlete team with first place championship wins in the Anderson Tournament, the Haines Tournament, the Section III Class A’s, the American Freedom League and Section III D1.
The team qualified 14 wrestlers in state finals out of 15 weight classes with two entries in one weight class pinning a Fulton vs. Fulton match.
Junior, Jared Crucitti won a Sectional Title and qualified for States, along with junior, Travis Race.
Senior, Vic Runeare was recognized by Time Warner Cable for Scholar Athlete of the Week, the first time any Fulton athlete has earned this distinction since Ells has been AD, he said.
Head coach, Jeff Waldron was also awarded Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 14-1 record.
Board of Education member, Dan Pawlewicz took the opportunity to send condolences to the athletic and teaching departments at FCSD, as they recently lost a vital member of their team.
Physical education teacher at G. Ray Bodley and long-time varsity volleyball coach, Caroline Richardson lost her battle to ovarian cancer on March 19, 2016.
“We lost one of your coaches (recently), please share that our thoughts and prayers are with her, her family and everyone at GRB. Big loss athletically and academically for Fulton,” Pawlewicz said.
With a successful winter season in the books, Athletic Director, Ells and all coaches and student athletes set their sites on the upcoming spring sports season.
