FULTON, NY – Athletic Director for the Fulton City School District, Christopher Ells presented a recap of the district’s winter sports season to the board of education at Tuesday’s (March 28) regular meeting.
Student athletes from the wrestling team were in attendance to be recognized for their successful season.
The varsity wrestling team, made up of 23 athletes, ended the season as Section 3 Class A champions for the 29th year in a row, Section 3 D-1 champions, OHSL league champions, first place champions of the Horseheads and Cortland Duels, and ranked fifteenth in the state.
Wyatt Willis and Andrew Yablonski were Class A and Section Champions, and Jared Crucitti, Adam Demauro, Camrin Galvin, Thomas Hughes, and Nick Noels were all Class A Champions.
Wyatt Willis and Jared Crucitti both recorded more than 100 wins and four wrestlers: Jared Crucitti, Thomas Hughes, Wyatt Willis, and Andrew Yablonski competed in the State Tournament.
Coach, Jeff Waldron was voted OHSL Freedom American League Coach of the Year.
“One of the things that we take pride in,” Waldron said, “is taking kids under our wing and trying to turn them into productive citizens … We do a lot more than just wrestling, we try to turn these young men into fine young men.”
Aside from the lessons learned through their sport, the team participates in community service together throughout the year as well.
“I’m awfully proud of these guys and I’m sure you are too, we do the best we can to represent the school, our families, and our program everywhere we go,” he told the board members.
Several other winter sports teams had successful seasons of their own, as well.
The varsity girls basketball team with 11 athletes finished the season as a NYS Scholar Athlete team, placing fourth in the league and winning the first place title in the Fulton Tip-Off Tournament.
Mckenna Chesbro was awarded second team all league and Erin Nicholson earned honorable mention.
Varsity boys basketball finished the season as a NYS Scholar Athlete Team with 11 athletes as Ells noted the season to be a “rebuilding year” after having lost eight seniors last year.
Varsity girls cheerleading held 16 athletes and placed first in the Love to Cheer competition.
Both varsity boys and girls bowling teams finished the season as NYS Scholar Athlete teams.
The boys bowling team placed first in the league while the girls bowling team placed second in the league, won the Section 3 Title and finished ninth in states.
Lucas Clark of the boys team bowled an 808 series to break a school record and also bowled a 298 game, followed quickly by Bradley Martin bowling a 299 game shortly after, just one pin shy of a perfect score.
The varsity boys and girls indoor track teams both finished as NYS Scholar Athlete teams with Ken Deloff of the varsity boys team placing second in the 3200m Run at sectionals missing first place by one second, qualifying for states.
The varsity boys swimming team, composed of 28 athletes, finished as a NYS Scholar Athlete team and placed third in the league.
Mark Tallents was awarded first team all league and Ryan Morehouse was awarded second team all league while Morehouse broke the school record in the butterfly stroke as a senior.
Lastly, the varsity hockey team was composed of 25 athletes combining Fulton with four other school districts; Hannibal, Red Creek, Central Square and Phoenix.
The team finished as a NYS Scholar Athlete Team finishing third in the D1 American Conference and earning a three seed in the D1 Section 3 playoffs.
Evan Beckwith and Rocco Cannatoa were awarded first team all league, Spencer Evans was awarded second team all league, and Austin Beckwith, Nolan Bonnie, Ethan Cimino, Seth Cooney, and Josh Dynka were awarded honorable mention.
The district overall competed 153 varsity athletes, 43 JV athletes, and 114 modified athletes.
As the spring season begins, Ells shares his excitement for the last athletic season of the school year.
Things to watch, he lists, include the varisty girls lacrosse team that has five athletes already committed to Division 1 colleges, the beginning of Unified Athletics which pairs special education and regular education students together in the sport of basketball, and the venture of switching leagues by branching away from the OHSL and joining the CNYCL, minimizing competition from 36 teams to 16 teams.
