Jimmy Phelps Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature Winner
FULTON, NY – Coming into Saturday night racing at the Fulton Speedway, Jimmy Phelps sat third in points with seven top-five finishes with only one position evading him in the 2017 season, a trip to victory lane.
In the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature Phelps started in the tenth spot and quickly made his way forward taking the lead on lap 8 with a power move on the topside of the speedway. Once out-front, Phelps was the class of the field parking his J&B Installations/HBR/Mohawk Northeast/No.98H in victory lane.
Other winners on Tom Juno’s Power Seal Driveway Sealing night were, Tyler Trump & Chris Mackey (Sportsman) Sean Beardsley (Late Models) Jimmy Moyer & Tom Juno (Novice Sportsman) Quinn Wallis (4-Cylinders).
Modified rookie Kody Graham and Tim Murphy would bring the field down to the green to start the Modified feature, but it was fourth place starting Andrew Ferguson who would lead the opening lap before a yellow on lap 2 and restart giving the lead to Graham.
Graham would hold a slim one car advantage on lap 5 while behind him you could have thrown a blanket over Adam Roberts, Ferguson, Jimmy Phelps and Billy Whittaker racing for second through fifth.
Jimmy Phelps had a fast car no matter where he put it on the speedway. On lap 8 Phelps carried his momentum on the top groove of the track to blast into the lead.
With 15 laps showing on the scoring tower, Phelps was using the low side in turns one and two and the high side in three and four to open a 2.5 second lead. Roberts, Tim Sears Jr., Larry Wight and Whittaker were in a tight battle for second through fifth.
The yellow flag would wave on lap 22 when Wight, who had moved into second, suddenly had something mechanically happen sending him pit side. Wight would make repairs and return.
With 10 to go, Phelps once again stretched out a big lead as the final laps started to click off the lap counter. Sears, Roberts, Pat Ward and Max McLaughlin were using every inch of the speedway looking for a top-five finish.
With 5 laps to go, Ward, who started 15th moved into second and looked for a way to run down Phelps. In the end Phelps was on rails as he cruised to the win over Ward. Tim Sears Jr., Max McLaughlin and Adam Roberts finished third through fifth.
The SUNY Canton Sportsman once again came out in big numbers with 48 cars signing into the pits. Close heat races would setup two full point, full purse 25-lap features.
In the first feature Dorian Wahdan would lead the opening 3 laps before Tyler Trump would grab the lead. Wahdan would clip the implement while running in third on the fifth lap.
With 10 laps complete, Jeremy Pitcher would hold a slim lead over Trump as they ran side by side keeping the lead in doubt with Corey Barker less than a car length behind the top-two.
Pitcher and Trump were putting on a show swapping the lead back and forth every lap with Barker still in contention when the yellow flag waved on lap 15 slowing the quick race pace.
On lap 17 Trump was able to wrestle the lead back as Barker moved into second. Pitcher started slowing with a mechanical issue and started losing positions.
Trump and Barker would also put on a show until Barker clipped the implement tire between turns three and four collapsing his front end. Trump would go on to the victory. Dave Marcuccilli making a rare Fulton start finished second followed by Mike Phelps, Todd Root and Glenn Forward.
In the second 25-lap feature Ricky Yelle led the opening 3 laps until a lap 4 restart when Chris Mackey took over the lead.
By lap 10 Mackey opened 2.2-second lead as he was setting clicking off fast laps out front. Mike Stanton Jr. and Yelle were in a close battle for second and third as Mike Button and Alan Fink showed in the top five.
With 10 laps to go, Mackey bolted out to a full straightaway lead over Stanton who looked for a way to close the gap. Yelle, Button, Fink, Zach Sobotka and Willy Decker Jr. raced in close quarters for third through seventh.
The only thing that slowed down Chris Mackey was a couple late yellows as he cruised to his first ever Fulton SUNY Canton Sportsman victory. Sobotka, Amy Holland came from 17th to finish third with Stanton and Yelle rounding out the top-five.
The 20-lap Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux Late Model feature would see Sean Beardsley grab the lead at the drop of the green setting a quick pace at the front of the field.
At lap 5 Beardsley running the top of the speedway and Keven Cook running the low side were putting on a show running nose to tail and side by side with Bret Belden, Jason Parkhurst and Steve Coit showing in the top five.
Jason Parkhurst would move into the second on lap 7 and take off after Beardsley.
When the race reached halfway, Beardsley and Parkhurst were slugging it out at the front of the field. Cook, Chris Fleming and Belden were having a close race of their own for top-five spots.
Over the second half of the race that included a green, white, checker finish saw Parkhurst throw everything he had at Beardsley, but Beardsley held his line he ran the majority of the race for his first win of 2017. Chris Fleming, Kevan Cook and Dale Caswell came home third through fifth.
In the first 15-lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature, Kyle Rood and Jake Davis would lead early laps before Jimmy Moyer who started 8th took over the lead on lap 10. Once out-front Moyer cruised to the win. Jake Davis, Bill Sauve, Dan Dupra and Jeff Lawrence chased Moyer across the line.
In the second 15-lap feature Tom Juno would lead every lap picking up the win. Juno would have to hold off a late furious challenge from Joe Abbass to go to victory lane. Casey Cunningham, Rachel Zacharias and Kelly Smith finished third through fifth.
Quinn Wallis was the class of the field in the 15-lap JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinder feature. Chris Bonoffski, Ray Bechler, Nate Powers and Joe Buske Jr. finished second through fifth.
Chris Rombough out of Fulton won another One-on-One Spectator race behind the wheel of his Subaru.
On July 22 we are encouraging everyone to wear yellow at the Fulton Speedway as we try to have a “Yellow-Out” for Childhood Cancer. Drivers during the evening will be passing a helmet with all funds raised going to the Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse. When there is a need, racing people are the best there is anywhere.
Racing on July 22 presented by Sunoco Fulton Ethanol Facility will see the Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux Late Models go topless. Tracey Rod Equipment Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinders will also be in action.
The Home Depot Kids Workshop will be on hand with fun activities for the junior fans. The Syracuse Microd and Quarter Midget clubs will have their cars on display.
Adult grandstand admission is $12 with everyone 18 years old and younger free. Pit is $27 participant, $30 nonparticipant. Grandstands open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.
