The Lady Buc basketball team scored a crucial win on Tuesday while Matt Clemons broke the 800 barrier on the lanes for the bowling team. Meanwhile, the boys’ basketball and hockey teams lost while the jayvee girls won their fourteenth of the season.
Lady Buc Cagers With Eighth
Marguerite Dillon scored 10 points and McKenna Brooks tossed in nine points to lead the Oswego varsity girls basketball team over visiting Fayetteville-Manlius 44-28 on Tuesday.
Also contributing points for the Bucs were Katie Knopp (6), Erica Atkins (5), Rachael Purtell (4), Brenna Riley (4), Nicole McCarthy (3), Emily Heagerty (2), and Marisa Dashner (1).
Oswego improved to 8-8 overall. F-M is 7-6. The Bucs outscored F-M 28-6 in the second half.
The Hornets assumed an 8-5 lead after one quarter of play. Early in the second quarter, F-M sank consecutive 3-pointers to build a 16-7 cushion. Oswego coach Michael Palmitesso called a timeout to stop the run, and he switched to a 1-3-1 zone defense.
Dillon netted a pair of hoops and Riley got an offensive rebound and made a nice move under the basket to score. This cut Oswego’s deficit to 18-14. When Purtell hit a runner in the lane, the Bucs were within two with a minute left in the half. The Hornets hit the final two buckets of the half for a 22-16 lead at the break.
“At the half we talked about making better decisions on offense, as we turned the ball over too many times (12 turnovers), and getting back on defense to stop the Hornets’ running game,” Palmitesso said.
Oswego’s zone held F-M girls to one field goal and three free throws in the third quarter. Brooks made a strong move to the basket and scored, and Dillon netted two more baskets on aggressive moves around the hoop.
Knopp canned a long trey to put Oswego in front for the first time with just seconds remaining in the third quarter. Oswego outscored F-M 12-5 in the quarter.
Palmitesso said the Oswego defense smothered the Hornets in the fourth as the Bucs outscored them 16-1. Riley scored, Atkins converted a conventional three-point play, and Brooks sank two free throws as the Bucs stretched their lead. At the other end, Oswego closed off the passing lanes, denying the ball inside. The Hornets forced bad shots at the end of the shot clock against the Oswego zone.
F-M needed to foul late to try to get back in the game, but the Bucs made 11-of-14 free throws down the stretch.
Palmitesso said the Bucs played their best home game of the season.
Oswego will host Baldwinsville at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday on Senior Night. Seniors Marisa Dashner and Emily Heagerty will be honored for their contributions to the program.
Clemons Shatters Pins
Oswego High bowlers continued to display their talent in competition against Baldwinsville.
Coach Bob Hoefer said, “The boys took all three points while the girls lost three. The boys continue to bowl well as a team and the girls are becoming consistent and stronger as a team.”
Individually, Oswego bowler Matt Clemons was sensational. The Buc veteran rolled 22 strikes out of 24 frames in the first two games.
He started off with a 279 and followed it up by missing a perfect game by just one pin as he rolled a 299. The third game of 226 resulted in an 804 series.
Oswego captured all three games against the Bees winning the first 1,073-1,014 while coming in with a 1,105-952 win in the second and a 955-915 victory in the third.
Zach Delbrocco had a 640( 228-243-169), Joe Clavelli 605 (200-171-234), Jim Rose a 567 (215-189-163) while Gavin Gilbert had two games scored with a pair of games at 203 and Kevin Goodale competed in the first game with a 151.
In girls’ action the Lady Bucs lost 776-633, 798-668 and 873-644.
Leading the girls was seventh grader Caitlyn grant with a 480 with games of 175-160-145. Tori Gardner had a 425 (148-137-140) and the only other Buc to roll three games was Meghan Flack with a 422 (134-136-152). Caitlyn McRae had a 244 for two games of 127 and 117 while Alaina Gaultz had a 198 (108-98). Aubrey Sanderson finished with a 93 while Allie Hare had an 83 in competition.
The Bucs improved to 30-6 while the Lady Bucs are not 12-24.
Varsity Five at FM
Fayetteville-Manlius is one of the top boys’ basketball teams in Section III and displayed its talent against the Bucs on Tuesday in the Hornets’ hive.
Oswego came home from FM on the short end of a 79-65 decision.
Recently, the Bucs have kept the game close in the first half, but the third quarter had snakebitten them. Against FM at the intermission the home team was leading 35-29.
However, a 30 point third quarter blitz put the Hornets on top to stay as they were leading 65-43 with eight minutes to go.
Leading the way for Oswego was Dustin Sands with a 23 point night followed by Josh Gillard with 16, Zach Gillard 11, Dylan Lavner nine and Trevor Martin six points.
The Bucs fell to 7-6 on the year while FM moved to 12-2.
Hockey Teams Edged
In a crucial league contest third place New Hartford left Oswego with a 2-1 victory over second place Oswego.
Oswego could not get its offense untracked, but jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Zach Zerrahn assisted by Jake Anderson.
However, New Hartford chalked up the equalizer early in the second period.
The game came down to the third period and with just under three minutes remaining the visitors took advantage of a turn over and Cullen Moran scored the eventual winning goal.
In net for the Bucs Chase Izyk had 28 saves while at the other end of the ice goalie Mike Cuchiarale stopped 18 Buc scoring attempts.
The Bucs fell to 9-2-2 in league and 11-4-2 overall while New Hartford went to 10-3-1 in league and 10-5-1 overa;ll.
Jayvee Lady Bucs Win Again
Oswego fought back from a tough last in the last game to defeat Fayetteville-Manlius in jayvee girls’ action 61-35.
The Bucs came out with a strong Tuesday night and all 10 players contributed.
FM was unable to handle Oswego’s strong full court pressure. Oswego continued to pass the ball inside and FM was unable to stop the Bucs.
Leading the team in points was eighth grader Cassidy King with 11. freshman Olivia Dowdle added nine. Julia Lavery, Kelly Skinner, and Claire Richardson all chipped in with eight each. Siara Wilson had six points.
The win boosted the Oswego record to 14-2.
