OSWEGO – On Thursday night (Jan. 25), the Oswego High School Girls’ Hockey team defeated Canton 5-3 at the Crisafulli Rink.
Sammy Terpening scored her first Varsity goal with 8:47 remaining in the period, she wristed a low shot past Canton Goalie Katie Premo to make it 1-0 Bucs.
Amelia Rastley and Stephanie Kubis were credited with assists.
The Bucs made it 2-0 with just more than one minute left in the first period.
Off a face off win by Hannah Koster, Stephanie Kubis fed defenceman Monica Cahill who blasted a low shot to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.
Oswego came out sluggish in the second.
Coach Mark Fierro said of the second, “We were so happy with our great effort in the first period, the girls thought the game was over and we really can’t afford to take any period off this year, teams will make us pay and that’s exactly what Canton did.”
The second period scoring was all Canton. With 6:38 left in the second, Oswego made a poor clearing pass intercepted by Canton’s Nikki Husniec, who beat Ashley Finch (19 saves).
Less than two minutes later the guests knotted the score, again sloppy play in the Oswego defensive end resulted on a Canton goal, this time from Lizzy Christy.
The third period saw Oswego come out with something to prove. 48 seconds in, senior captain Stephanie Kubis lit the lamp to give the Bucs a lead they would not relinquish.
Monica Cahill was credited with the assist.
At the 9:36 mark in the third, Oswego’s Amelia Rastley and Katie Fierro were on a two-on-one; Fierro wristed a shot over Premo finishing off the great feed from Rastley.
Canton was not going down easy.
Lizzy Christy got her second goal of the night, cutting into Oswego’s lead with just more than five minutes remaining.
But Oswego held on and Cammi Ahern added an empty net goal with 39 seconds left to make it a 5-3 final.
Goalie Ashley Finch recorded 19 saves for the win.
Fierro said, “It was good to see us come out strong in the first and really play well in the third. We just need to be able to play a solid three periods as we head into Sectionals.”
Oswego currently sits in third place in the section behind Ithaca and Skaneateles, but there are still some games to be played.
Oswego will know its first round opponent by Sunday.
