OSWEGO, NY – Softball and lacrosse action was under way through the weekend with the Lady Bucs falling in extra innings on the softball diamond and the lacrosse team pulling off a spectacular rally to win in overtime against host South Jefferson.
Extra Inning, Come-From-Behind Softball Effort
The Oswego Lady Bucs varsity softball team was finally able to launch the 2011 season in Oswego on Saturday afternoon against Section IV Union Endicott.
Oswego fell behind 4-0 early, but fought back to send the game to extra innings before falling 6-4 in nine frames.
A combination of infield hits, errors and a walk resulted in a 4-0 UE lead.
Pitcher Emily Kolenda had a good day on the mound as she pitched all nine innings and gave up just three hits, fanned nine and walked only one.
Meanwhile the Lady Bucs did have an offensive day at the plate with 11 hits.
Trailing 4-0 Oswego fought back for two in the bottom of the third as Kaitlin Friel got on via a base hit and a two-out effort saw Allie Yule taking first when she was hit by a pitch.
Devynn Wilder had an infield hit for one RBI and then Kolenda had a base hit as did Ashlee Wapen.
The Bucs tied it up in the sixth as Friel singled, went to second on a sac by Vicki Race and scored on Erika Lazzaro’s base hit.
Yule eventually hit a single to bring in the tying run.
After a ninth inning error UE came up with a triple and sac to determine the final outcome.
Kolenda had a three-hit day at the plate and Yule, Friel and Wilder each had two hits while Lazzaro and Wapen also had hits.
Spectacular Rally for Buc Varsity Lacrosse
Oswego, playing its third game in five days, overcame a Butler-esque second half to edge the Spartans 11-10 in overtime.
The Bucs started out well, jumping out to a 3-1 lead early in the game, only to have South Jeff come back and lead 5-3 at halftime.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “We had difficulty clearing the ball, and made numerous unforced turnovers.”
South Jefferson took control after halftime, and with three and a half minutes left in the game the hosts were leading by a 10-6 score.
Buc Dan Maniccia scored to make it 10-7; half a minute later Matt Lloyd scooped up a rebound and buried it to make it 10-8.
However, the situation looked grim as Oswego was hit by three consecutive penalties in one minute.
The Bucs forced a turnover and threw a 60 yard pass to Maniccia, who sprinted to the goal and found Lloyd on the back post and his man-short goal made it 10-9 with :39 left in the game.
Jon Kaplewicz won his sixth faceoff of the period and Kyle Clark completed the comeback as he scored in a five on five situation 15 seconds later to tie the game at 10-10.
A South Jeff player was called for a push as time wound down, giving Oswego the opportunity to start the overtime period with the ball and a man-up opportunity.
Kaplewicz quickly found Dom Cianfarano open and he scored the game winner on a low outside shot 14 seconds into the overtime.
Oswego had scored five goals in three minutes and forty-seven seconds and two of them were scored when shorthanded.
Kaplewicz won seven of eight faceoffs in the fourth quarter including five in a row.
When the final stats were tabulated Matt Lloyd had four goals on the day and Kyle Clark added two as did Jeremy Purce.
Dom Cianfarano, Dan Maniccia and Josh Sova all had one goal apiece.
Assists were contributed by Kaplewicz with two while Dave Mathes and Dan Maniccia had one each.
In goal Trent Yule had two saves for the 4-2 Bucs.
