OSWEGO, NY – Dylan Lavner was named the “Most Valuable Player” and Dustin Sands earned a berth on the all tournament team as the Oswego High School Buccaneers captured the championship of the Fulton Christmas Classic with a 63-47 win over Central Square.
Oswego trailed 3-2 in the opening moments, but Ryan Patrick launched two consecutive three-pointers from the corner and Oswego never looked back. Solid, aggressive defense combined with the ability of the guards to work the ball deep under the hoop to wide open Bucs resulted in a dominating performance.
The Bucs ran the floor and controlled the play against the smaller Red Hawks. Tenacious defense forced numerous turnovers and the Bucs were able to run out to a commanding 25-11 lead after one quarter. OHS didn’t let up one bit as the halftime count was 40-19.
With Coach Bob Misch rolling fresh players off the bench the Bucs didn’t miss a beat and built a 56-29 advantage after three.
In a battle of reserves Central Square did “win” the fourth quarter as the Red Hawks outscored the Bucs 18-7 for the 63-47 final.
Lavner finished with 14 points leading the balanced Bucs attack while Ryan Patrick added a dozen. Dustin Sands tallied nine, Josh Gillard seven, Zach Gillard and Michael Thompson six, Kevin Carpentier five, and Nate Miller a pair.
Central Square was paced by all tourney team selection Malcolm Anderson with 16.
In the first round of the tournament the Bucs completely dismantled an outmanned and outgunned Carthage squad 77-38.
The 5-1 Bucs roared out of the gate for a 26-6 advantage after one quarter of play and it was 40-16 by halftime. With everyone seeing action the lead after three was 61-27 before the final tally.
Hockey Team Surprised
Despite outshooting Hamilton 40-18 the Oswego Buc varsity boys’ hockey team lost a 4-3 overtime decision to Hamilton at Morrisville Ice Complex.
Hamilton entered the game 2-6 while the state ranked high flying Bucs were 5-1. However, it was a game that the winning team simply never gave up.
The Bucs held a 3-2 lead entering the third period and while the Bucs dominated play Hamilton goalie Brady Carroll was standing tall between the pipes as he stopped every third period threat. Meanwhile, Hamilton scored the equalizer to send it into overtime.
The overtime saw Hamilton gained its third win of the season.
For the Bucs John Phillips had two goals while Zach Zerrahn had the other. Cody Mariano and Josh Sova each had two assists while Travis Kearns added the other assist.
In the net Carroll finished with 37 saves while Oswego’s Chase Izyk had 14 saves on the night.
Keefe & Ford Lead Track & Field
In a meet highlighted by many personal best efforts, the Oswego indoor track team, turned in a fine performance at the Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays.
The meet, held in honor of longtime track and current Marcellus cross country coach Oscar Jensen, a pioneer in the development of indoor track in the section and the state, was held at the fast SRC Arena track, on the campus of Onondaga Community College.
Leading the Bucs strong effort was standout Cory Keefe. Keefe, a junior, ran an outstanding personal best time of 7.74 in 55 hurdles, to outdistance the field in placing first. He also combined with senior Xander Lara in the 2 x 300 meter relay, to place finish second in a very competitive field, with a time of 1:18.1. Both Keefe (36.87) and Lara (41.23) ran personal best times in the relay.
Senior captain Whitney Ford, just missed running her best in the 300 meter, with a fast time of 45.50, to place first in her section. She also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14′ 9 1/4″.
Chloe Patterson turned in bests in the 55 meter dash and 400 meter dash for Oswego.
Other bests for the rapidly improving Bucs were earned by Kali Esden in the 55 meter hurdles, Kaylee Baldwin in the 55 meter dash, Lexi Hanna in the 600 meter run, Mariel Schickling in the 300 meter dash, Marsaili Knapp in the 55 meter hurdles and 600 meter run, and Vanessa Wiltsie in the 1000 meter run, with Robert Swan turning in a big improvement in the 3200 meter run (12:23.6).
Other fine efforts for Oswego were turned in by senior captain David Johnson, Kyle Kemper, Paul Oleyourryk, Frenchy Meirelles, and Deondra Smith, who were solid in the 400 meter dash, coming back from illness.
Jayvee Basketball Title Game
Oswego qualified for the championship game of the Fulton Christmas Classic Tournament, but officials failed to arrive and the game was forced to be rescheduled.
