OSWEGO, NY – It is a rarity when on the same day the softball and baseball team of a school combine to no-hit the opposition.
However, it happened on Tuesday as the Buc boys’ varsity baseball team and the girls’ varsity softball team walked off the field with decisive wins in which the opponent was held hitless.
Meanwhile, many other Oswego athletes were in action.
No Hitter For Buc Nine
Chris Bosco and Cody Battista combined for a no-hitter in a 17-0 victory over Nottingham.
Oswego won the game with a five-run third inning and the Bucs kept scoring with four in the fourth, five in the fifth and three in the sixth during an 18-hit offensive explosion.
Matt Pirro and Autie Ascenzi each had a homer on the day while Ryan Lavner had a triple and Kyle Perez a double.
Chalking up RBIs were Tyler Lisec, Rich Carpentier, Tom Drumm, Perez and Ascenzi each had two while Corey Galletta, Kevin Carpentier and Lavner along with Pirro each had one.
No Hitter for Softball
Emily Kolenda and Ashlee Wapen shared the mound for a Buc no-hitter in a 40-0 win over Nottingham. Kolenda went five innings and Wapen went one as they combined for their first no-hitter.
It was a record setting day for the Bucs as the run total was the highest one game total in history.
Erika Lazzaro had the first homer over the new fencing as she finished with a 5×5 day at the plate and hit for the cycle.
In the bottom of the first the game was over as Allie Yule and Lazzaro tripled and following was an error, a Kolenda double and a hit by Mary Montagnola for an RBI for a 4-0 lead.
Then came the 15-run, 10-hit second and this one was out of reach.
Kolenda had 10 strike outs in four innings while at the plate Yule, Wilder, Firel and Montagnola had four hits each, Sarah Mancuso three hits, Kolenda two and Wapen along with Taylor Maas also had hits for the 1-2 Bucs.
Lacrosse Victorious
The Oswego High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team moved to 5-2 on the year with a 13-2 win over Nottingham.
Dom Cianfarano and David Mathes combined for eight goals to lead the Bucs.
Cianfarano who has been on an offensive tear in the early part of the season had another five-goal game while Mathes had three.
Matt Lloyd, Dan Maniccia, John Phillips and Josh Sova all had a goal for the Bucs while Lloyd finished with four assists while Jeremy Purce and Maniccia had two each.
Bryan Cary, Jon Kaplewicz and Cianfarano all had assists.
In net, Trent Yule had 12 saves.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “We got a lot of guys into the game early and had scoring from a variety of players. Most of our goals were assisted which is always a good thing. On defense we played pretty well, causing turnovers and that led to many breaks for us.”
Golfers Kick Off Season
On Tuesday, the Oswego girls’ varsity golf team opened its 2011 season, competing in a tri-match against Auburn and West Genesee at Westvale Golf Course in Camillus.
The weather was chilly but manageable for the girls – a light breeze and the slight threat of rain got everyone’s attention and held it throughout the nine-hole round.
This year’s Lady Buc Golf Team is comprised of 15 high school golfers with varying levels of experience.
Practicing and playing at the pristine and demanding Oswego Country Club, these girls have already shown much improvement since the start of the season over a month ago.
The 2011 Oswego girls’ golf team is made up of seven freshman, two sophomores, five juniors and one senior.
The players are: Hannah Allen, Abby Atkins, Ashley Deveney, Tess Gordon, Sarah Gosek, Michaela Kearns, Courtney Kelly, Maddy Muckey, Caroline Reynolds, Tory Welsch, Meghan LiVoti, Allison Moshier, Emilee Anderson, Madi Collins and Lauren Daniels.
With so many young players, it is difficult to say exactly how this team will perform this season.
So far, the team’s work ethic and enthusiasm for the game have turned many heads at the country club.
As for Tuesday’s match, the team showed flashes of brilliance against two very strong teams in Auburn and West Genesee.
Oswego ended up placing third in this match, but Buc golfer Sarah Gosek carded a team low round of 56 including a beautiful 2-putt par on the treacherous uphill par-4 sixth hole at Westvale.
Of the eight returning players that Oswego possesses this year, Sarah had the lowest stroke average last season.
Sarah looks to lead the team again this year, but it looks like she will have some strong competition from sophomore Courtney Kelly whose 9-hole score of 57 was very respectable in Oswego’s first outing.
Also scoring in this opening match were Buc golfers Abby Atkins (60) and Ashley Deveney (61). These scores were both personal match bests for Abby and Ashley.
The girls will continue to work on their games and show impressive fortitude in learning the rules, procedures and nuances linked to this enduring sport.
Next up for Oswego is another tri-match on Thursday against two more very good teams (Liverpool and Rome).
This time, the girls will attempt to defend their home turf, the perilous par 35 front nine at Oswego Country Club.
Liverpool Upends Softball Team
Visiting Liverpool pounded out 15 hits to support the five-hit pitching of senior Ashley Kovarik to defeat Oswego 9-1 in the league opener for both CNYCL softball teams.
The outcome was never in question as the Warriors scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings en route to the win. Lucia Castellani pounded an opposite-field homerun to open the scoring in the first inning.
Oswego couldn’t mount any threats against Kovarik who kept the Bucs off-balance with a mix of off-speed pitches.
The Lady Bucs were led by Allie Yule who had a pair of hits. Kaitlin Friel, Taylor Maas, and Erika Lazzaro added one apiece.
Emily Kolenda took the loss for the Bucs (0-2).
Coach Mike McCrobie is concerned about the team’s slow start.
“It’s not the fact that we lost to Liverpool, they are always among the league leaders, but it’s how we lost. The mental errors we are making should not be made at the varsity level,” he stated.
Oswego returned to action on Tuesday, hosting Nottingham.
Buc Nine Loses First
Liverpool came to Oswego with bats rarin’ to hit the baseball and the Warriors dominated until the last of the seventh en route to a 15-6 victory.
The visitors slugged 17 hits including two homers and a pair of triples.
The Warriors jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and Oswego came back with one in the second, but Liverpool iced the game with a four-run third for a commanding 7-1 advantage.
The Bucs did manage seven hits on the day, but four of those were in the five-run seventh.
Matt Pirro homered and Corey Galletta also slugged a three-run shot over the right field fence for the biggest Buc offensive explosion of the day.
Kevin Carpentier got the start for Oswego and was the first of three pitchers as Kyle Perez and Ryan Lavner also toed the mound.
Winning pitcher Andrew Schreyack pitched six innings and gave up three hits while fanning six.
Also getting hits for the Bucs were Lavner with a single and double, Tom Drumm with a double and Darren Bezio and Zack Salvador each had a hit.
Lady Buc Lacrosse Falls to Liverpool
A week ago, the Bucs faced off against Liverpool under less than perfect conditions and lost.
Monday the weather was better, the Bucs were improved, but in the end the OHS Lady Buc varsity lacrosse team lost 10-5.
Coach Laura Burger said, “We kept the game close with some solid defense played by Britt Kearns, Kelsey Ross, Mackenzie Robinson, Allison McPherson and Goalie Taylor Bowman. We took many first-half shots on goal that didn’t see the back of the net.”
She continued, “There was a second half improvement for the Bucs as they ended the game 10-5. This score is an improvement over the last time they faced Liverpool only one week ago (16-6).”
Oswego will be facing six spring break games beginning this Friday and continuing through next Saturday.
Taylor Giglio had two goals as did Mikayla Place while Tayler Bowman stopped 22 shots.
JV Softball Falls
The JV softball team dropped its season opener to visiting Liverpool 4-2.
The Lady Bucs had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the 7th, but could not extend the game.
Margeurite Dillon led the Bucs with two singles and played a solid shortstop.
Carrie Kelly, Rachel Purtell and Molly Malone had hits.
McKenzie King suffered the loss.
She allowed 9 hits, walked none, and struck out one Liverpool hitter.
