OSWEGO, NY – Section III action is under way and Eliza Parker was outstanding in the girls’ Class AA track and field event while the golfers played well, but finished the season.
Meanwhile, the Oswego High School baseball team was eliminated in the first round game, 10-1, by Rome Free Academy.
Track Sectionals For Lady Bucs
Senior Eliza Parker turned in a fine performance for the Oswego girl’s track team, at the Section III Class AA Track and Field Championships, held yesterday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Competing against the section’s elite, Parker finished second in the 400 meter hurdles for Oswego, with a personal best time of 1:06.6. She also ran a best of 15.6 in the 100 meter hurdles, to place fourth.
Senior Alexis Files turned in a season best time of 1:10.5 in the 400 meter hurdles, to earn fourth place for the Lady Bucs.
Sophomore Whitney Ford turned in a strong effort in the sprints, running a time of 13.29 in the 100 meter dash and a fast time of 28.32 in the 200 meter dash.
Oswego will return to action on Thursday, returning to Cicero-North Syracuse High School, for the Section 3 State Meet Qualifier, scheduled to get under way at 4 p.m.
Bucs Come Up Short On Links
Four Oswego High School golfers were in action on Thursday as they attempted to qualify for the pinnacle event in high school golf – the state tournament – a grueling two-day, 36-hole event with a field made up of 60 of New York State’s top high school golfers.
On the girls’ side, senior golfer Rachel Baxter birdied her first hole at Rogue’s Roost, but could not get anything going after that and missed the 18-hole cut in North Syracuse.
For Rachel, this day brought her high school golfing career to a close, a career which spanned three solid years and included a senior season where she captured team medalist honors a team-leading 12 times.
On the boys’ side, the fast, undulating greens that help give Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton so much of its character got the best of the three Bucs on Thursday. And, they weren’t the only ones that struggled with the flat stick as many scores soared into the 100s on the classic Robert Trent Jones layout.
The three Oswego golfers Corey Schuffenecker, Scott Quenville and Sam LaLonde were disappointed that their scores did not qualify for state play, but the trio was happy about one thing at the end of the day – not having to take another putt on those greens.
For Quenville and Schuffenecker, this round was the last of their prestigious high school careers as they will be headed off to college in the fall.
As for LaLonde, well, if all goes well in his remaining two seasons, he will be playing a few more qualifying rounds at Seven Oaks.
He is looking forward to the opportunity, but probably not the greens.
Sam will begin his quest for another shot at sectionals and the state team in August when the 2010-11 boys’ golf season gets under way.
In the end, these players may not have made the state team on Thursday, but they made some great memories.
Modified Girls Edged
The Modified Lady Bucs fell to Central Square for the second time, dropping a hard fought 10-8 decision to the visitors.
The Bucs fell behind by four goals twice.
Once they fought back to take a one goal lead, and then could only cut the second deficit to two goals. They finished with a respectable 6 wins against 4 losses. Three of the losses came by two goals or less.
Allanna Maleonado led the scoring with her first two goals of the season. Also chipping in goals were Erika Atkins, Julia Lavery, Morgan Cook, Devin Higgins, Kellie Gorman and Alexis Dingman.
Mikayla Allen (seven saves) and Carrie Yurrkon (five saves) each played well in the goal.
Modified Softball Battles
Cicero-North Syracuse dominated the Oswego modified Lady Bucs softball team in a 16-1 win.
Allison Batchelor pitched a full game.
She struck out five, walked one; gave up 11 singles, a triple and two home runs.
C-NS struck out 15 Oswego batters, walked three and gave up two singles.
Oswego’s only run came in the fourth inning when Shanell Meyers walked, got to second on a single by Rachael Purtell, moved to third on a walk to Carrie Kelly and scored on a passed ball.
Alecia Ascenzi reached on a single in the fifth, stole second and reached third on an error.
In the seventh Monica Randall reached on a walk but Oswego was unable to move her around the bases.
