OSWEGO, NY – Softball, lacrosse and runners were among the active sports teams recently for the Oswego High and Oswego Middle School athletic programs.
Softball Highly Competitive
Three Oswego pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the Lady Buccaneer softball team defeated Corcoran on Monday, 14-0, in CNYCL league play.
Laura Miceli started and worked three innings, extending her scoreless innings-pitched streak to 24. She struck out three and didn’t allow a hit.
Sophomore Emily Kolenda relieved for the next three innings, striking out 5 and surrendering only one hit.
Morgan Lavner came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning to close out the victory.
Offensively, the 10-3 Buccaneers pounded ten hits en route to the win, led by Erika Lazzaro’s single, double, and homerun. She drove in three runs and also stole a pair of bases. Allie Yule added a double and a single and Marissa Canale and Devynn Wilder each added a pair of singles. Jess Slight (single, 2 RBI), Kaitlin Friel (single, 2 RBI), and Morgan Lavner (hit, RBI) all contributed to the offense.
The Lady Bucs have six games remaining – five of them league contests, and according to Coach Mike McCrobie, anything can happen.
“I believe that of the final six, we could be 6-0, 0-6, or anything in between. Three of the games are against state-ranked opponents (West Genesee twice and CNS), so we’ll see what happens,†he said.
The West Genesee Wildcats twice rallied from one-run deficits in their final at-bats to overtake Oswego 5-4 in a thrilling 10-inning high school softball game here on Tuesday.
The win moves state-ranked West Genesee into sole possession of first place in the CNYCL American Division.
The loss drops the Lady Bucs to 6-2 in league play and 10-4 overall.
Trailing 2-0, Oswego rallied for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to knot the score. Devynn Wilder singled and pinch runner Kaitlin Friel was sacrificed to second by Morgan Lavner. Erika Lazzaro drove home Friel for the Bucs’ first run.
Three other Lady Bucs contributed to the second run. A leadoff double by Emily Kolenda, a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Maas and an RBI single by Michele Canale made it 2-2.
The score remained tied into extra innings when an RBI double by Lazzaro plated pinch runner Mary Montagnola.
The Wildcats answered back with three hits in the bottom of the 8th tying the game again. Only a strong defensive stand, highlighted by leftfielder Jessica Slight’s catch with the infield and outfield drawn in, kept the Bucs alive.
With the International Tie-Breaker in effect in the top of the 10th, Oswego scored its fourth and final run. Lavner, placed on second base by rule, was sacrificed to third by Friel and scored on a passed ball.
West Genny answered again with back-to-back two out hits, the game-winner coming off the bat of Katie Regin to give WG a 5-4 walk-off win.
Laura Miceli was the hard-luck loser. She pitched a complete-game ten innings. She struck out nine and walked only one.
“That was possibly the best pitching performance of Laura’s varsity career,†stated McCrobie. “To look at the box score you’d think, ‘Wow, they had 15 hits,’ but she hit locations extremely well and pitched out of some real tough jams.
McCrobie also praised his defense, in particular the outfield of Slight, Lavner, and Maas who handled many more opportunities than they had in recent games.
The Lady Bucs return to the road on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Central Square before returning home on Tuesday to host state-powerhouse C-NS and Wednesday to face Henninger on Senior Day.
FM Outruns Lady Bucs
The Oswego girls track team closed out its CNYCL American Division dual meet season Wednesday, losing to the undefeated host Lady Hornets of Fayetteville Manlius, by the score of 86-46.
“Our team turned in many strong efforts and performances throughout the competition” said Coach Jim McCaul ” We stayed even with FM in the sprints, hurdles, and field events, but could not stay with them in the middle distance and distance events. FM is coming off its third straight national championship in cross country and has an outstanding group of middle distance and distance runners.”
he Lady Bucs were paced by the outstanding performances of senior standouts Vanessa Sheffield and Eliza Parker. Sheffield was a triple winner for Oswego, winning the long jump (15’7″), the triple jump (32′ 5 3/4″), and the high jump, with a fine leap of 4’8″. Parker won the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.2), the 100 meter hurdles, tying her personal best time of 15.5, and turned in a personal best time of 26.9 in the 200 meter dash, to finish second.
Sheffield and Parker combined with teammates Alexis Files and Whitney Ford in the 400 meter relay, for an outstanding time of 51.6, to place first.
Oswego is currently ranked second among the section leaders in this relay.
Other second place finishes for Oswego were earned by rapidly improving Whitney Ford, with an outstanding personal best time of 12.6 in the 100 meter dash, Jessica Sheffield in the shot put and Aryelle Caruso in the discus.
Versatile senior Alexis Files, coming back from illness, finished third in the 400 meter hurdles and triple jump for the Lady Bucs, with Whitney Ford earning third place in the long jump and 200 meter dash, in a personal best time of 27.4
“This team was come a long way since the beginning of the season and I am anticipating continued success as we approach the upcoming championship season” said McCaul.
Lady Buc Laxers Solid
“We played an aggressive game right out of the gates tonight, we had very good draw control which really gave us the possession of the ball we needed tonight. We have good ball movement every where on the field and we placed out shots well tonightâ€, said Oswego High School varsity lacrosse coach Laura Burger as the Bucs scored an 18-12 win over Central Square.
Amanda D’Amico scored four and assisted two while Leah Folgherait had three goals and an assist as did Mikayla Place and Samantha McCarrick. Maia Czarnecki scored two as did Tayler Giglio. Kaitlin Armstrong scored while Taylor Cianfarano and Tessa Opet had an assist.
Taylor Bowman had six saves and Hayley Lukaczyk had five for the Bucs.
Against West Genesee the Lady Bucs lost 20-9.
Coach Burger said, “We did not get the shots off we needed to tonight, and as West Genny showed why it is number 2 in the state, they outshot us almost 2 to 1 tonight and that made the biggest difference in the game. They are always a tough game for us and we played an aggressive first have with them and kept pace with them for a while. We need to reflect on this one and get ready for our last 3 games which will be at home to get ready for sectional play.â€
Place had three goals and an assist while D’Amico scored two and Rebecca Martin, Folgherait, Czarnecki, and McCarrick each scored. Also chalking up assists were Mackenzie Robinson, Cianfarano, and Giglio.
Bowman had 11 saves while Lukaczyk had six for the 8-5 Lady Bucs.
Jayvee Boys Win
The Oswego Boys JV lacrosse team defeated a strong General Brown squad Saturday morning 10-6 at Wilber Field.
Leading the Bucs in scoring was Jon Kaplewicz with three goals. Dan Maniccia added two goals and one assist. Scoring single goals were Kyle Clark, Kaleb Astoria, David Mathes, and Jeremy Purce. Also, notching assists for the Bucs were Clark, Eric May, and Chase Izyk.
The Bucs won 13 of 19 face-offs and dominated groundballs 45-23. Matt Skinner played outstanding in net for the Bucs making 17 saves.
Varsity Lax Team Battles
The Oswego High School varsity boys’ lacrosse team lost to Corcoran 14-6.
The Cougars roared to an 8-1 lead in the first and Oswego never recovered.
Dom Cianfarano and Wes Ihlow had two goals each while Matt Donovan and Matt Howard each scored one. Alex Bush, Cianfarano and Howard each had an assist.
Trent Yule had 16 saves for the Bucs.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “After the first quarter, we played harder and fought back a bit, but by then the damage had been done. It was a physical game. Trent Yule had 16 saves, and none of them were easy. Nothing came easy tonight.â€
Jayvee Softball Dominates
The jayvee softball team captured its second win of the season 15-3 against visiting Corcoran.
Isabella Winklestine and Mary Montagnola singled three times. Courtney Purce doubled and singled. Vicki Race singled twice, while Sara Mancuso, Mikayla Fox and Marguerite Dillon each singled.
McKenzie King got her first win in the circle.
Modified Lacrosse Splits
The Modified Lady Bucs split a pair of games this week. They dropped a close contest 9-7 to Central Square on Monday, and then they bounced back with a 16-10 defeat of the Corcoran Cougars on their home field.
Leading the scoring barrage for the 3-1 Bucs were Erica Atkins with four goals and an assist, and Allison Hare with four goals and two assists.
Sydney Knight chipped in three goals, Morgan Hillman two goals, and Cassidy Taylor, Devin Higgins, and Kara Collings all added a goal. Morgan Cook had an assist.
Leading a strong Defensive effort was Courtney Osmun, Alexis Dingman, and Gabe Lombardo. Goalies Mikayla Allen and Carrie Yurkon turned back 11 Corcoran shots.
Oswego Lacrosse Scores Over Henninger
Oswego scored a 12-4 win over Henninger in modified lacrosse action.
Brandon Tracz scored four goals while Ryan Martin added three goals and three assists.
Garrett Dunsmoor chalked up three assists while Sean Mooney scored one and assisted on two others, Dalton Tracy, Shane Bowman, Justin Canale and Matt Wise had one goal apiece.
Strong midfield play was displayed by Jake Gardner, Greg Mayer, Nick Reiner, Pat Baer, Devon Hillman and Sean Tracy.
Trey Love had three saves and Hunter Izyk four saves in goal for the 6-0 Bucs.
Oswego dominated Central Square 10-3
Matt Wise scored three goals, while Ryan Martin had two goals three assists. Brandon Tracz had one goal and two assists while Zach Zerrahn one goal and one assist; Garrett Dunsmoor, Shane Bowman and Ben Annal one goal apiece. Jake Gardner and Mitch Schrader each had one assist apiece.
Strong defense was displayed by Jacob Rodriguez, Max Torbitt and Jordan Sherman.
Trey Love nine had saves and Hunter Izyk six saves.
Oswego also won 6-4 over C-NS.
With the score tied 3 –3 going into the last quarter Oswego outscored CNS 3 –1 in the final quarter to win the game.
Brandon Tracz and Mitch Schrader had two goals apiece. Ryan Martin and Brian Williams had one goal apiece. Zach Zerrahn and Schrader added assists.
Ben Annal, Greg Mayer Jon Buske and Brian Williams led the team in ground balls.
There was strong defense by Jake Cary, Max Torbitt and Eric Doviak.
Trey Love had seven saves and Hunter Izyk two saves.
Modified Softball
Oswego trailed 9-3 after the first inning to win 21-17 against West Genesee.
Kaitlyn Clary threw two innings with one strikeout. She allowed nine runs with six walks and four hits. Allison Batchelor threw five innings and had six strikeouts. She allowed eight runs with seven walks and seven hits.
Oswego took advantage of walks, wild pitches and passed balls.
Hitting singles for Oswego were Molly Malone (two), Monica Randall, Carrie Kelly, Meghan Livoti, Jordan McCauley (double and a single).
Camillus 13 Oswego 1
Monica Randall pitched two innings. She struck out one, walked three and allowed five singles and a double and nine runs.
Allison Batchelor pitched four innings. She struck out four, allowed nine singles and a double and four runs scored.
Allie Nave pitched six innings for Camillus and struck out 10, walked five allowed three hits and one run scored.
Oswego hits were by Molly Malone (RBI), Meghan Livoti and Carrie Kelly.
Sam Cutro and Alecia Ascenzi made nice catches in the outfield. Allison Batchelor and Taite Phillips made some nice plays to get the runners out at first.
Meghan Livoti made a heads-up play to throw the runner out at home.
Carrie Kelly caught a solid game.
Cats Dominate Jayvee Softball
The JV softball lost 12-1 to a solid West Genesee squad.
Vicki Race, Sara Mancuso, Ashlee Wapen, and Chrissy Abare each hit safely for the Lady Bucs.
MacKenzie King and Wapen shared the pitching duties.
Oswego will host Central Square on Thursday.
Jayvee Lacrosse Win
The Oswego girls’ jayvee lacrosse defeated visiting Corcoran 14-12 on Tuesday afternoon at Wilber Field.
The Bucs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but were unable to maintain it, and went into halftime trailing 8- 7.
The Junior Lady Bucs turned the game around in the second half outscoring the visitors 7-4 over the last 25 minutes to take the win.
Pacing the balanced Oswego attack were Kelly Chetney, Allison McPherson, Kelsey Ross and Libby Sherman with three goals each.
Abby Haessig and Andrea Folgherait also scored with one goal each.
Adding assists were Alexa Healy, Mary Cate Rice, Sherman, Chetney and McPherson with one each.
Goalie Kerrigan Cummins had a great second half and finished the game with 17 saves.
