OSWEGO, NY – In action this week the girls’ varsity lacrosse and softball teams were victorious while outstanding performances were turned in on the track and among the various jayvee and modified teams.
Lady Bucs Get Offense Going
Taylor Giglio and Mikayla Place evenly split six goals as they helped pace the Oswego High School girls’ lacrosse team to a 16-9 win over visiting Nottingham-Henninger.
The Bucs won their sixth game of the season as a balanced attack sparked the victory.
Oswego held a 9-4 halftime lead and marched to victory after breaking open the game in the early moments of the second half.
Kaitlin Armstrong, Maia Czarnecki, and Leah Folgherait each scored two goals while Amanda D’Amico, Sam McCarrick, Rebecca Martin and Nikki Paulhardt each had one.
In the assist department Czarnecki had two as did D’Amico. Emily Barlow, Brittany Kearns, Armstrong and Folgherait each had one.
Oswego moved to 6-3 on the year and is 2-2 in league while the visitors went to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Lady Buc Softball Hits Proctor Hard
The Oswego High School varsity girls’ softball team remained unbeaten in league play with a 7-0 victory over Utica Proctor here on Wednesday.
Five Lady Bucs had multiple-hit games. Morgan Lavner doubled and singled, and Devynn Wilder, Allie Yule, Emily Kolenda, and Laura Miceli each added a pair of singles. Erika Lazzaro and Michele Canale each contributed to the twelve-hit Oswego attack.
Miceli picked up the win in the circle, scattering 4 hits over the first innings. Emily Kolenda preserved the shutout with two scoreless frames.
Coach Mike McCrobie said the team cannot look back on its good start with what lies ahead. “We travel to Liverpool on Friday to face a team that has had our number over the past five years,†McCrobie stated. “We’ll have to play a flawless game to compete with the defending Sectional champs.â€
On Saturday night, four Oswego County teams will compete in the StrikeOut Cancer Tournament sponsored by the Buccaneer Boosters and Uniforms Etc. All proceeds from the voluntary “toll†set up at the gate will be given to the Friends of Oswego County Hospice.
The 4 p.m. games will pit Oswego vs. Mexico and Fulton vs. Pulaski, with the winners squaring off at 6 p.m. in the championship games.
The losers of game will play a 6 p.m. consolation game as well.
“The real winners will be the families and the hospice patients who will benefit from the funds we bring in,†McCrobie stated.
Oswego advanced to 5-2 overall and 5-2 in league competition.
Varsity Boys Lacrosse
Oswego lost to Cicero-North Syracuse 15-10 in varsity lacrosse action on the NorthStars turf.
It was an offense battle with CNS breaking the game open in the third quarter. After one the home team held a 4-3 lead, but had built the advantage to 8-5 at halftime. However, a five goal third period while limiting the Bucs to just two goals provided what proved to be the difference.
Dom Cianfarano had a strong game with five goals while Matt Howard added two, Pat Holland, Wes Ihlow and Ryan Ramsey with one each. Matt Donovan had a five assist game while Cianfarano had two and Ramsey one.
Trent Yule finished with 13 saves as Oswego dropped to 2-8.
Girls’ Track
The Oswego girls’ track team, lost to a strong Lady Wildcat team by the score of 87-53, Thursday afternoon on West Genesee High School track.
Senior standouts Eliza Parker and Vanessa Sheffield led the Lady Bucs’ effort, with each winning two individual events and running a leg on Oswego’s strong first place 400 meter relay team.
Parker, one of the top hurdlers in the section, won the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.6) and the 100 meter hurdles, in an outstanding time of 15.5. She also placed second in the 200 meter dash with a fine time of 27.6. Sheffield, maintained her status among the jumping elite, with first place finishes in the long jump (15’1″) and triple jump (32’5″), in addition to finishing second in the 100 meter dash (13.4).
Both Sheffield and Parker combined with Alexis Files and Whitney Ford, in winning the 400 meter relay, with a fast time of 52.3.
Senior Jessica Sheffield also placed first for the Lady Bucs, with a strong heave of 27′ 4″ in the shot put.
Other second place finishes for Oswego were earned by Aryelle Caruso in the discus, Emily Henderson in the high jump, and Whitney Ford in the long jump, with a fine leap of 14′ 8 1/2″.
Versatile senior Alexis Files, placed third in the 400 meter hurdles and triple jump for Oswego, with other thirds being turned in by Whitney Ford in the 100 meter dash, and Jessica Krauss in the discus with a personal best.
Other personal bests for the rapidly improving Lady Bucs were earned by Kaylie Allen, Kaleigh Fitzsimmons, Pia Steiner, Emily Henderson, Carlie Fredette, and Jessica Krauss, with a best in the shot put.
Oswego returned to action Friday afternoon, hosting the 32nd Annual Buccaneer Booster Girls Track and Field Invitational. The competition featured all nine schools in Oswego County.
Oswego JV Girls Win First Game
Exploding for nine second half goals, the Oswego jayvee girls lacrosse team won its first game of the year with a 12 – 6 win at home against Henninger.
After a lackluster first half, which saw the home standing Bucs trail at half 4 -3, the team did a complete turnaround in the second half. Oswego scored the first six goals of the second half, gaining momentum and confidence, as they put the game out of reach for the visiting Knights.
Leading the Oswego attack were Alexa Healy with six goals, Kelly Chetney, Andrea Folgherait, Abby Haessig, Allison McPherson, Libby Sherman and Sarah Stoebner with one goal each. Adding assists for the Bucs were Chetney and Sherman with two each, and Kelsey Ross with one.
The entire defense did an outstanding job, led by Goalie Kerrigan Cummins (12 saves).
Others contributing to the aggressive Buc defense were defenders Cassie Collins, Danielle Faivus, Brianna Favata, Andrea Folgherait, Page Hart and Alyssa Suits, as well as middies Kelsey Ross, Abby Haessig, Sarah Stoebner, and Kelly Chetney.
The lacrosse team dropped a tough game on the road at Cicero-North Syracuse, 16-9. The Lady Bucs played a solid offensive game, but sloppy play on ground balls, and some missed defensive assignments were too much to overcome.
The rejuvenated offense was once again led by Alexa Healy, with 3 goals and 1 assist. Also scoring for Oswego were Kelsey Ross with 2 goals, and Libby Sherman, Abby Haessig, Kelly Chetney and Allison McPherson with 1 goal each. Sherman and McPherson also added 2 assists each. Goalie Kerrigan Cummins played well again, with 13 saves.
Oswego dropped a recent game at Auburn, 14-8.
Oswego started the out strong, leading midway through the first half by a score of 3-2. Auburn regrouped and led 5-3 at the half.
The Maroons outscored the Bucs 9-5 in the second half to reach the final score.
Even in defeat, the Young Lady Bucs continue to show improvement, especially on the offensive end. Leading the attack for Oswego were Alexa Healy with four goals, Kelly Chetney with two, Kelsey Ross and Sarah Stoebner one goal each. Adding assists were Libby Sherman and Mackenzie Dunsmoor with two each, and Hannah Fitzgerald with one.
Goalie Kerrigan Cummins led the “D†with 14 saves.
Jayvee Boys’ Lax Winners
The jayvee boys’ lacrosse team picked up a decisive 15-4 victory over Henninger on Tuesday at Henninger.
Leading a balanced scoring attack for the Bucs was Kaleb Astoria with four goals. Jeremy Purce chipped in three goals. Erik May and John Kaplewicz scored two apiece. Dan Maniccia added two goals and one assist. Also scoring a goal were David Mathes and Matt Feeney.
Chase Izyk dominated face-offs for the Bucs winning several draws. Matt Skinner stopped four shots as the defense thwarted many of Henninger scoring chances. The Bucs played well continuing their solid play from Friday’s 7-5 victory over Watertown.
Seventh-Eighth Lax Team Wins
The Modified Lady Bucs earned another win with a total team effort in an 11-5 win over Auburn.
Leading the scoring for the victors were, Kellie Gorman, Mallory Gordan, and Sydney Knight with two goals each. Chipping in goals were Devyn Higgins, Cassidy Taylor, McKenna Bahner, Hailey Ihlow, and Allison Hare.
Hare also assisted on a goal.
Mikayla Allen recorded seven saves and Carrie Yurkon stopped six shots.
