OSWEGO, NY – With Margo Dillon playing the best game of her young varsity career and Bella Winklestine ripping down a game-high 12 rebounds, the Oswego Lady Bucs varsity basketball team scored a 41-31 victory over Henninger.
Coach Phil Reed said, “Margo played probably the best game of her varsity career, filling in for Bella when she picked up her second foul in the second quarter. She helped stabilize the defense and took care of the ball and scored on defense.”
Continuing he noted, “I was especially pleased with a team total of only 11 turnovers. In recent games we have been rushing things a bit on offense, but were much more patient in this game. The less turnovers we have, the fewer the opportunities our opponent has to score.”
The Bucs took care of the basketball in the contest against Henninger.
The game got off to a slow start with the Bucs trailing 10-5 after one quarter. However, in the second it was a complete turnaround as the OHS offensive push posted 14 points on the board while surrendering just two points for a 19-12 halftime lead.
Henninger attempted a comeback in the third and closed to within three points at 29-26. However, the Bucs were able to pull away in the final eight minutes for the victory.
Taylor Giglio had a dozen points and three steals while Courtney Louis scored nine points and added seven rebounds. Winklestine had seven points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Erica Atkins finished with six points and two steals while Dillon connected for five points, seven rebounds and three assists and Emily Barlow had two points and six rebounds.
Bowling Splits With Boys Sweeping
It was a three-point night for the Oswego boys’ bowling team with a sweep of Baldwinsville as the Bucs moved to 11-1 overall on the year.
Cameron Byrne finished with a 749 series while Gavin Gilbert came in at 734 and Matt Clemons 652 as they were the lone Bucs bowling all three games.
Oswego won the first game in convincing fashion with a 1,150-986 win, but the second game was much closer with the Bucs outpinning the Bees 1,038-1,005 and in the finale it was a 1,180-938 win.
Chalking up two games for the Bucs were Joey Clavelli (397) and Zack Delbrocco (390) while Kevin Goodale had a 235 and Jimmy Rose 211 to conclude the scoring.
The Lady Bucs lost 757-637, 831-761 and 856-635.
Three games were rolled by Christie Hoefer 502, Cairlin Clemons 483 and Ashlee Lytle 433. Rolling one game each were Victoria Soper 110, Tori Gardner 109, Rachel Nyle 104, Sierra Adams 101, Meghan Flack 99 and Caroline Reynolds 92.
Hockey Romps Over New Hartford
In hockey striking quickly could be the key to the game and the Oswego hockey team did just that in an 8-1 win over New Hartford.
Oswego scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game as Dave Mathes scored first followed quickly by a Trent Yule red lighter.
In the second period the Bucs did the same thing as Josh Sova scored a minute into the period and Dan Maniccia tallied less than 60 seconds later. Jake Sperino and Cody Mariano also gave the Bucs a huge boost and a 6-0 advantage. However, New Hartford picked up a goal late in the period.
The third Mariano had his second of the game and Dan Ryan finished off the scoring.
Assistwise Maniccia had three while Tyler Grimshaw, Jake Oleyourryk and Sova had two each. Single assists were credited to Jeremy Purce and Mathes.
In net Josh Cooley picked up the win while at the other end of the ice Mike Cuchiarale finished with 23 saves on the 31 shots he faced.
Varsity Cagers Fall to Strong Foe
A combination of size and speed proved something the Oswego High Bucs varsity basketball team could not overcome against visiting Henninger as the Black Knights won 72-47.
Henninger came to Oswego and jumped out to a commanding 11-0 lead before the first quarter ended at 24-5.
By halftime the Bucs trailed 37-19.
However, in the third the Bucs started to come back and closed the deficit to 14, at 37-23, before the visitors ran off 11 quick points and pulled away for good.
Oswego scoring came from Dylan Lavner with nine, Zach Gillard with eighth, Ryan Patrick seven, Kevin Carpentier four, Nate Miller four, Jonah Restuccio and Michael Thompson three ach while Josh Gillard, Dustin Sands, Connor Riley and Kaleb Astoria with two points apiece for the 2-1 Bucs.
Doviak Gets Lone Mat Win
The Oswego varsity wrestling team got a victory from 285 pounder Eric Doviak as he pinned Brad Johnson in 2:38, but it was the lone win in a 66-6 loss to Baldwinsville.
The Bucs were forced to give up 42 points on seven forfeits. However, at 126 Jordan Perchway was pinned by Chad McArdell in 1:234 and Matt DiFibio was pinned by Connor Ross at 132 in 46 seconds. At 152 Ryan McArdell decisioned Miguel Vazquez 8-1 while 182 pounder Mike Ruggio lost a 9-4 verdict to Joe Nasoni.
Jayvee Lady Bucs Win
The Oswego jayvee girls’ basketball team chalked up a 42-25 win over Henninger.
Coach Jessica Burridge said, “It was truly a team win, with 9 of the 12 players contributing with scoring.”
The Bucs came out slow to start the game making unforced turnovers and not getting out on shooters. This did not discourage Oswego. They found a way to fight back and overcome in the first half, scoring 17 points in the second quarter. Oswego went into the half up 22-14.
Oswego found a way to drive hard to the basket and connect from the free throw line. Oswego pulled away and Henninger could not catch up. Nicole McCarthy took over the defensive end leading the team with rebounds snatching 13 off the glass and had 6 steals.
High scorer for the Bucs was Mariah Metcalf with 13 points. Rachael Purtell added 9, and Katie Knopp contributed 5.
Seventh Grade Cage Win
The Oswego Middle School seventh grade boys’ basketball team won its eighth game in 10 outings with a 48-29 decision over Mexico.
The team finished the year 8-2.
Representing the 2011 team were Derek Cahill, Brandon Cheeley, Alex Davies, Patrick Dowdle, Zach Eastman, Aaron LaTulip, Alex McRae, Ben Muckey, Kolin Rock, Matt See, Nathan Schultzkie, Nick Sullivan, Carson Smith, and Tanner Wegzyn.
Mod Blue Finishes 9-1
The Oswego Blue modified volleyball team concluded its season at 9-1 after a 4-1 win over Cicero-North Syracuse.
Oswego won 25-20 then lost 25-20 while the Bucs swept the final three 25-8, 25-18 and 25-21.
Coach Ted Beers said, “We played a good game tonight. We were back 10 points in set one and I had to use a timeout and we need to regain our focus. The timeout must have helped as we stormed back and won the first set. The second set was similar to the first as we allowed CNS to serve us off the floor and again we needed to take a timeout and take a deep breath. The girls again charged back, but the charge back in set two fell short a little. We came out in the last three sets a lot more determined to not allow any more chances for CNS, and we did not. One thing of this game that stuck out in my mind was that every girl for our team got a stat. I am very proud of the growth these girls have had and I am happy at how much they have worked on their skills. Serving has been our highlight all season long.”
