OSWEGO, NY – Lady Bucs volleyball proved victorious and there were solid individual efforts on the cross country course at Weedsport as the regular season starts to wind down for Buccaneer student-athletes.
Lady Bucs Sweep
The Oswego Lady Bucs volleyball team attempted to come back from a tough match the night before versus Baldwinsville in a match versus a Corcoran team that was trailing them in the standings.
The result was a three-set 25-11, 25-15, 25-11 win. Oswego is now 10-4 overall and 8-3 in league play. With two matches to go Oswego is positioned to clinch its second league title in a row.
Coach Ron Ahart said, “I was really afraid we may come out flat versus Corcoran after putting in a good effort the night before against Baldwinsville especially on their Senior Night. Corcoran had been playing very good volleyball as of late. However, we came out strong and aggressive in all parts of our game and won handily.”
In the first set Oswego won 25-11. Oswego was led by Jasmine Davis (5 kills), Cydney Ward (2 kills), Carlie Morley (2 kills), and Kelsey Ross (1 kill, 4 aces). Krisi Stemple added 6 assists and 2 kills to the attack.
In set two Oswego continue to dominate and won 25-15. Ross (4 kills), Ward (3 kills), and Davis (3 kills) led the Oswego attack. Stemple added 9 assists and two aces to support the attack.
Maggie Mooney (2 aces) and Rebecca Martin (1 kill, 1 pt. blk.) also helped Oswego’s cause.
In the third set Corcoran appeared to be down and Oswego raced to the early lead behind Stemple’s serving to win 25-11.
Ward (6 kills), Davis (6 kills), and Ross (3 kills) helped secure the win. Stemple finished another strong night adding 14 assists and 2 aces.
Playing good defense was Mary Montagnola (8 digs). Also adding to the stat sheets were Laura Naron and Emily Barlow.
Davis finished with 14 kills, an ace and four digs and Ward had 11 kills, two aces and a point block. Ross had eighth kills, five aces and six digs while Stemple chalked up 29 assists, five aces and two kills.
Oswego plays next at CNS Tuesday and returns home Wednesday night for Senior Night.
During the celebration Oswego will honor their three senior captains Krisi Stemple, Jasmine Davis and Laura Naron beginning at 6.
Boy Spiked By B’ville
The Oswego varsity boys’ volleyball team lost 3-1 to Baldwinsville on Senior Night.
The Bucs lost the first two games in competitive fashion 25-20 and 25-19 before wining 25-20. However, the fourth game saw the Bees gain a 25-20 verdict to win the match.
Kevin Carpentier had 23 assists, two kills and a couple of digs for the Bucs while Ryan Patrick finished with seven kills, a block and two digs. Ryan Lavner finished with four kills, a block, an ace and a dig and Jake Metcalf had six kills and two blocks. Cooper Harse had three kills, two blocks and a dig, Tom Drumm a dig, Mike Thompson four kills, two blocks and four digs and Brennon Richardson two aces and a dig.
Morgan Fifth At Weedsport Invite
This past Saturday, the OHS cross country teams competed at the Weedsport Invitational.
As usual the course had a steep hill and a very steep downhill as its trademark.
Colin Morgan, raced out to the front and was in the top ten for the first mile of the race. Morgan then gradually moved up to run amongst the top seven for the second mile and sprinted in for a fine fifth place finish (17:06) over the three-mile course.
Coach Dan Greene said, “Last year Colin finished tenth to win a t-shirt and this year he at least wanted to be in the top ten. He certainly was motivated as he finished fifth!”
Mitch Rabalais improved his time from a year ago by two minutes finishing 27th. Jon Mahan (19:49), Austin DeMott (19:52), and Jake Annal (19:57) came in consecutive finishing order as they continue to try to close the gap of time between the number one runner and the number five runner.
Greene said, “Jake had a very good race as he dropped his time by three minutes from last year!”
Jimmy Dillon and Matt DiFabio ran well in the competitive varsity race which was won by #9 state ranked Hannibal.
In the JV race, Oswego was represented by Andrew DiVita and Steve LiVoti.
LiVoti Strong For Lady Bucs
Freshmen Meghan LiVoti, turned in the finest race of her young career Saturday, at the 30th Annual Weedsport Cross Country Invitational.
LiVoti ran an outstanding time of 25:10.7, over the very wet and hilly junior-senior high school athletic complex course, to finish eighth among large schools in the Varsity 2 race and 11th overall, in a very challenging competition.
“Megan turned in an outstanding race” said Coach Jim McCaul. “Her strong work ethic is leading to much improvement this season. She is adjusting well to the challenges of the longer varsity courses and stronger competition.”
Sophomore Kaela Shafer turned in a strong effort to finish second in the race for the Lady Bucs.
Varsity Football Falls
Josh McRae ran the ball in from the three yard line for a 6-0 Oswego Buc lead over visiting Jamesville-DeWitt on Friday night, but eventually the Rams roared to life and coasted to a 46-6 victory.
The teams battled through a tight first half under inclement conditions. At the end of the first quarter JD held an 8-6 lead. Oswego managed to play solidly, but midway through the second quarter the visitors scored and then scored again for a 20-6 halftime edge.
It was senior night for the Bucs and playing their final regular season game at home were Kyle Lamb, Tyler Lisec, Ty Sweeting, Paul Esden, Chris Pike, Darren Bezio, Dan Ellingwood, Aaron Callahan, Josh McRae, Dakota McHenry, Cody Battista and Richie Carpentier.
Mod Soccer Falls
Oswego Modified boys’ soccer team suffered a loss to Liverpool 3-0.
Oswego stayed competitive throughout the game keeping Liverpool scoreless during the first and third quarters. Liverpool scored two goals in the second and one goal in the fourth quarter.
Both teams struggled with the unfavorable weather of heavy rain, wind and cold temperatures.
Modified Cross Country In Action
Oswego modified runners lost to Central Square as leading the Bucs across the finish line were Rob Swan, Bill Volkomer, Paul Oleyourryk, Rob Bruce, Trenton Baker, Chase Pelton and Steve Geers.
