OSWEGO, NY – It was another busy weekend for Oswego High School sports teams.
Football Scores Twice
The Oswego varsity football team lost to host Cortland 48-14 on Friday at SUNY Cortland.
The Purple Tigers (2-2) took a 41-7 halftime lead and never looked back.
Cortland held a 20-0 lead, but with 4:16 remaining in the first half Josh McRae went in from 15 yards out for the first Buc score of the game and Dan Ellingwood’s PAT was good for a 20-7 deficit.
The Bucs did get on the scoreboard once again with 10:21 left in the game as Chris Pike threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Dom Cianfarano and the PTA was good for the 14th Buc point of the night.
Oswego (0-4) made several mistakes and committed some turnovers, Coach Tom Czarnecki said.
Josh McRae finished the game with approximately 130 yards.
Oswego will play at Fulton at 6:30 p.m. next Friday as both teams are looking for their first win of the season.
Volleyball Marathons See Bucs Edged
Oswego Lady Bucs varsity volleyball team lost a four-set match to West Genesee on Friday night as the teams locked up in a tremendous match.
The Bucs lost the first game 25-22 before coming back to even the match with a 25-23 verdict in game two.
However, the Wildcats came back to win 25-20 and 25-23 to walk out with a 3-1 win.
It was the first loss of the year for the Bucs as Oswego remains unbeaten in CNYCL American competition.
Emily Barlow finished with a kill, three assists and two digs while Jasmine Davis had 19 kills and nine digs.
Rebecca Martin had two digs while Mary Montagnola had two kills and 15 digs. Kelsey Ross finished with 14 kills and two aces and eight digs while Krisi Stemple had 43 assists and three digs.
Cydney Ward had a solid game with 16 kills, two aces, four blocks and three digs for the 6-1 Lady Bucs.
Boys Lose In Five
Oswego got off to a fast start on boys varsity volleyball competition with a 25-23 and 25-18 win.
However, Central Square then won the final three games 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17 to complete the rally and a 3-2 victory.
The Bucs fell to 2-2 on the season.
Kevin Carpentier had six kills, an ace, 39 assists, one block and a dig while Cooper Harse had vie kills and six blocks.
Dylan Lavner finished with nine kills, two assists and two blocks. Jake Metcalf had six kills, an ace, an assist, three blocks and two digs.
Ryan Patrick finished with 11 kills, an ace, two assists, three blocks and 16 digs while Justin Peterson had a kill, block and dig.
Brennah Richardson finished with six digs and Mike Thompson seven kills, eighth blocks and 14 digs.
Varsity Tennis Shut Out
Baldwinsville gained a 7-0 win over Oswego in varsity tennis.
Kahlei Reisinger defeated first singles Dominque Canale 6-2, 6-2 while in second singles Sarah Mancuso lost to Amari Pollard 6-3 and 6-0. Third singles saw Cathenni Cutsiti defeat Aubrey Schrader 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action Melinda Davis and Rachel Taylor defeated Ashley Deveney and Alison Knight 6-2, 6-1 while in second doubles Sarah Corcoran and Taylor Ferrari defeated Joanna LeFerve and Alison Yule 6-1 and 6-0.
Meanwhile in the third doubles it was Colleen Morgan and Maddie Price defeating Tayler Bowman and Casey Caroccio 6-1, 6-0 while in the final doubles Cathryn Darling and Rebecca Krass lost to Hannah Mautz and Taylor Slink 6-2, 6-7, and 7-5.
Jayvee Football Loss
The Oswego jayvee football team lost 26-12 to Cortland in the latest game.
Dave Culeton connected on four passes for 109 yards while on the receiving end Fred Ferguson had three catches for one touchdown and 105 yards.
Justin Canale had one catch for four yards.
Rushing Fred Ferguson had 30 yards and a score while Gabe Wood rushed for 34 yards and Brent Denny 23 yards.
On defense Trey Love finished with 14 tackles while Gene Lagoe and Colten Dryden had eight tackles and Adam Doviak six.
Oswego plays host to Fulton at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Joe Wilber Field.
Buc Jayvee Volleyball Wins
Oswego jayvee girls volleyball coach Ted Beers said, “We have focused a lot of our attention on this match. We saw them in our tournament and knew what we needed to do to win this match and that became our focus and it paid off. The girls worked hard during the match and we really had to play a good defensive game to pull out the win. We made some mistakes on the floor which cost us, and we had to recover from them, but the girls did. I am very proud of how well they played tonight and they have worked hard and this win shows that.“
The Bucs defeated West Genny 25-21, 25-23 and lost one game 25-16.
Mikayla Allen had three aces, Emily Anderson one point block and Erica Atkins two aces and a point block.
Cat Clancy had a kill while Madi Collins had an assist. Alexa Healy had three aces and five assists.
Emily Henderson had a dig. Courtney Lavere had two aces and two point blocks. Cortnie Purce had a kill and an ace.
Sarah Stoebner had two kills and Bella Winkelstine two kills and an ace.
Jayvee Boys Defeat C-NS
The jayvee boys’ volleyball team won 25-22 and 25-19.
The Bucs received a very strong serving run by Jack Crouch in the first game to keep the lead for the entire game.
Jeremy Galvin and Tom Dillon also displayed very good passing throughout both games to set up hits on the weak side from Dan O’Brian and Aaron Baxter.
Oswego also scored a 25-19 and 25-23 win over Central Square.
The boys’ confidence carried over from the win two days prior and was displayed in superb defense against a hard hitting Central Square team.
The Bucs once again dominated in two straight games with strong blocking in the middle, and extremely consistent serving.
Josh Costa came away with five great aces and Tom Dillon finished with three.
Jayvee Tennis Action
Oswego lost to Baldwinsville 6-1 in jayvee tennis action.
First singles Hayley Adams split sets, losing in the third set 5-7, 6-4, 1-6.
Fourth doubles Jessica Krauss and Morgan Thomas split sets providing Oswego with its only win.
Scores were 1-6, 6-3, 7-3 (tiebreaker).
