OSWEGO, NY – An eighth grade golfer paced the Oswego High School golf team to victory while the varsity soccer teams played well in victories.
Meanwhile, the swimmers were solid in their most recent meet and the girls’ volleyball team continues to win.
Buc Golfers Win By Four Strokes
The Oswego golf team used every bit of its home course advantage on Tuesday to edge a pesky Liverpool squad by a final stroke count of 206-210.
Alec Kunzwiler, an eighth grader at Oswego Middle, was the difference in this highly contested match in shooting a medalist tying round of 38 on the front side at Oswego Country Club.
Coach Dan Rose said, “Alec’s round included four birdie putts under ten feet (two of which he converted), and a plethora of well struck tee balls. Alec is usually not the tallest player in his foursome and his drives are never the longest, but he knows how to score, which is something you just can’t teach.â€
Continuing Rose noted, “After a double bogey start to his round, Kunzwiler proceeded to play his next eight holes in one over par. When all was said and done, he had fired the lowest competitive round of his short varsity golf career. A Liverpool player might have summed it up best when he said (about Alec’s round), ‘the kid hits it straight and putts it well, and that’s exactly what you need for this course’ and that is what it was all about.â€
Sam Lalonde tied Kunzwiler for round of the day, also shooting 38, though he accumulated his score in a much different fashion. Only hitting one green in regulation, Lalonde was able to get the ball up and down throughout his round.
On hole nine, he left his second shot short of the green, chipped up to eight feet, and drained the curling par putt.
“Sam’s round was a little more stressful than Alec’s,†commented Coach Rose after the match.
Continuing he noted, “When a player has a bunch of birdie putts and they are hitting greens like Alec did today, the round is low stress. When you have to get up and down like Sam did all day – it wears on a player, high stress. Both rounds are impressive. It’s funny how two players can shoot the same number, but have such different rounds.â€
Three other Oswego golfers rounded out this day of scoring including Brandon Tracz (42), Matt Lloyd (44), and Luke Boshart (44).
The team finishes off its season with 6 straight matches before heading to Green Lakes State Park next Thursday for sectionals.
Oswego is now 7-3 overall on the season, 2-2 in league play.
Their next match is on Wednesday versus Rome and Utica Proctor.
Lady Bucs Road Winners
Henninger proved to be quite stubborn against the Lady Bucs varsity soccer team.
Oswego escaped its trip to Syracuse with a 1-0 win over the Black Knights.
It was a nice league win for the improving Lady Bucs as the squad is now 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Kayla Sharkey streaked down left side of the field and played a nice early through ball to the on running Jodi Kester who calmly tucked the ball in the bottom left corner, with under ten minutes to play for the lone goal of the game.
The defense played another solid game limiting the Henninger attack led by junior goalie Jamie Bouffard and her 16 saves.
The Bucs play Fayetteville-Manlius on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Turrill Street field.
Home Soccer Win For Boys
In the latest two wins the Oswego varsity boys’ soccer team has had to strike in the second half.
On Tuesday, at the Oswego Middle School, the Bucs won their third game of the year, 2-1 over Henninger.
Once again Stephen Auyer continued to contribute to the Bucs effort with a goal and assist while Aaron Marsallo scored the other Buc goal.
Henninger scored it only goal with under a minute to go in the first half of play as once against Oswego needed to fight back.
Early in the second Auyer knotted it up as he picked up a rebound and fired it home.
Goalies Matt Skinner of Oswego and his counterpart at the other end of the field Andrew Jackson held strong throughout most of the second half.
However, it only was going to take one more goal to win this one and shortly after Auyer scored the equalizer it was time for the winner as Marsallo completed a play that was started by Dave Caramella and finished by the combination of Auyer and Marsallo.
Skinner finished with 13 saves on the day while Jackson had eight for the Knights.
Volleyball Wins Number Seven
In non-league action the Lady Bucs captured their seventh win of the year in a three game sweep of Rome Free.
Oswego moved to 7-1 overall and is still at 6-0 in league play.
The Bucs won each game handily and stated with a 25-9 win followed by 25-8 and 25-13.
Emily Barlow finished with three kills and two aces while Jasmine Davis had eighth kills, four aces and three digs.
Rebecca Martin had a kill while Mary Montagnola had five digs. Maggie Mooney finished with an ace and two digs while Carlie Morley had three kills and four blocks.
Lauran Naron had two kills, an assist and dig while Kelsey Ross finished with six aces and two digs. Krisi Stemple had two kills, two aces and 26 assists and Cydney Ward had four kills and five blocks.
Depth Too Much For Lady Buc Swimmers
A team that has 59 swimmers definitely had depth and West Genesee scored a 99-85 win over the Lady Bucs in the pool on Tuesday.
Coach Josh Lerch said, “Although we were able to take an early lead in the meet, the West Genesee team proved too tough to beat in the long run. Their team of 59 girls was very deep and should do well this year against the top teams in the Section III.â€
The Oswego Lady Bucs stayed tough though; swimming hard right up until the final relay, and then really poured it on to win the final relay of the day.
Swimming outstanding best times for the Bucs were:
Mara Parker placing second in the 200 freestyle, coming in at a personal best time of 2:07.73.
Senior Michaela Auer and Junior Kaila McClelland finishing first and second in the 200 I.M.
Senior Haley Annal placing first in the 100 fly with a season best time of 1:08.68 and finishing second in the 100 back, also with a season best time of 1:11.27.
Junior Kaila McClelland finishing second in the 500 free with a personal best time of 5:53.34.
Lerch said, “In addition to all of those great swims, and more, the Oswego Lady Buc freshman divers also made a splash at the meet, finishing third and fourth on the boards. For Carrie Gilbert, it was her first diving meet of the year and she qualified for Sectionals (154.25). Finishing third was Hailey Ihlow in a lifetime best score of 171.10.â€
In conclusion he said, “We swam a very good meet, we just didn’t have enough this year to come out on top against West Genny. We will look forward to Friday’s home meet against Mexico.â€
Jayvee Volleyball Unbeaten
Oswego jayvee volleyball scored a 25-7 and 25-16 win over Rome Free Academy.
Coach Ted Beers said, “We played a good serving game and never allowed RFA the chance to find a groove. Our girls need this momentum to build up and get ready for our Liverpool game this Thursday night. We know what we need to go out and do against Liverpool and we tried to work in some of those aspects in our game with RFA. Everyone contributed on the floor and when we get that we play good matches. We now move to 8-0 on the season and we know Liverpool will be a tough match for us this Thursday.â€

Boys’ Jayvee Volleyball Action
Oswego lost in two straight games to Baldwinsville in boys’ jayvee action by scores of 25-17 and 25-22.
Coach Jake Ottman said, “The boys made some spectacular plays on offense, but they were too few against the scrappy defense by the Bees. The Bucs fought hard in the second game to continue the win streak with great passing from Jeremy Galvin and setting by Drayzen Schrecengoss but it wasn’t enough for the win.â€
Their record is now 2-2.
Girls Modified Victory
The modified girls’ soccer team scored a 5-2 win over Central Square.
Claire Richardson scored three of Oswego’s five goals while also scoring were Morgan Demong and Nora Culeton.
Margo Dillion and Grace Gilbert each had an assist for Oswego.
On the defensive end Emily Lloyd led the team, while Kelci Somers stopped 1 of the 2 penalty kicks awarded to Central Square.
