OSWEGO, NY – Sydney O’Hara drove home Brittany Paul with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning as perennial softball power Cicero North Syracuse edged Oswego High School 2-1 in CNYCL action here on Tuesday.
In a well-played game that was scoreless through five innings, the Lady Bucs got on the board first.
Michele Canale reached on an error and was sacrificed into scoring position by her sister, Marissa. She stole third and scored on an RBI single by Devynn Wilder, giving the Lady Bucs a 1-0 lead.
The Northstars responded with their only two runs in the bottom half of the inning for the victory.
Pitcher Laura Miceli took the loss for Bucs, scattering six hits.
The Bucs stayed close to the Northstars with solid defensive play, according to coach Mike McCrobie.
“Our infield played very well against the high-pressure slap-hitting offense that CNS employs. Their play, along with an unbelievable diving catch in centerfield by Morgan Lavner, gave us a chance to win,†he said.
McCrobie added that the team plans to use the last three games to build on.
“Three tight, one-run games against the likes of CNS, B’Ville, and Liverpool will only help us down the road,†McCrobie said. “We’ve identified several things that we need to work on, and plan to get to work during our practices and scrimmages on the spring trip.â€
The Lady Bucs are now 2-2 on the season (1-0 in the league). They will compete for the next six days at the ESPN Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The next home contest will be a league game on April 26 against B’ville.
Buc Nine on Roll
In a game called after six innings, the Oswego High School varsity baseball team scored a 24-4 win over Nottingham.
It was an offensive explosion with 20 Buc hits lighting up Bulldog pitching while Nottingham defense let their pitchers down as eight errors were committed by the home team.
Oswego scored nine in the top of the first inning and that was all Oswego needed for its second win of the year.
The Bucs added three in the third, nine in the fourth and three more in the top of the sixth. Meanwhile, Nottingham went scoreless through five innings and added four in the bottom of the sixth.
Kevin Carpentier pitched three innings and did not give up a hit and fanned six while Corey Galletta came on in relieve and surrendered three hits, but struck out six and walked one while giving up four runs.
It was a hit parade for the Bucs as Bobby Canale scored four, and drove in four runs with two doubles. Adam Clawson went 3×3 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base while Dan Montagnola was 2×2 with two runs and an RBI and Tyler Perez 2×3 with a run, two RBI and a stolen base.
Mike Brown had a hit, a run, two RBI and a stolen base. Cody Battista was 1×2 with two runs and an RBI and Autie Ascenzi 1×3 with two runs and an RBI.
Corey Galletta added a hit and two RBI and other hits were chalked up by Shane Demo, Kevin Carpentier, Griffin Mervine, Rich Carpentier and Tom Drumm. Bob Beach scored two runs while Chris Bosco, Casey Gibson all scored a run. Chris Pike had an RBI.
Lady Bucs Fall in Close Lax Contest
Oswego held an 11-7 lead at intermission, but the Lady Bucs varsity lacrosse team eventually lost a hard fought 18-16 decision to Fayetteville-Manlius.
The Bucs have played in several tight contests and have been in every game this season as the squad posts a 3-2 record.
Once again offense wasn’t a problem as Amanda D’Amico had a five-goal night and added one assist while picking up five ground balls and forced three turnovers.
Maia Czarnecki had four goals including three ground balls and forced a turnover.
Tayler Cianfarano scored two goals and added an assist while Sam McCarrick had a two goal night. Scoring one each were Leah Folgherait, Tayler Giglio and Brittany Kearns.
Taylor Bowman was in goal for Oswego.
Oswego Golfers Open 2010 Campaign
On Tuesday, the Oswego girls’ varsity golf team opened its 2010 season competing in a tri-match against Auburn and West Genesee at Westvale Golf Course in Camillus. The weather was perfect for golf as sunny skies and a light breeze played perfect complement to the freshly mowed fairways and greens.
This year’s team is comprised of 12 high school golfers with varying levels of experience.
Practicing and playing at the pristine and challenging Oswego Country Club, these girls have already shown much improvement since the start of the season over a month ago.
The 2010 Oswego girls’ golf team is made up of three freshman, six sophomores, two juniors and one senior. The players are: Hannah Allen, Abby Atkins, Rachel Baxter, Marisa Dashner, Ashley Deveney, Tess Gordon, Sarah Gosek, Michaela Kearns, Courtney Kelly, Joanna LeFevre, Caroline Reynolds and Tori Zerrahn.
As for Tuesday’s match, the team showed flashes of brilliance against two very strong teams in Auburn and West Genesee. Oswego ended up placing third in this match, but Michaela Kearns carded her best career nine-hole round,- a total of 54 strokes on the back nine at Westvale including a beautiful par 3 on the tricky 13th hole. Also scoring for Oswego in the match were golfers Rachel Baxter, Sarah Gosek, and first-year player Courtney Kelly.
The girls will continue to work on their games and show great spirit in learning about the rules, procedures and nuances associated with this life-long sport.
Jayvee Sports Action
The JV softball lost to a tough Cicero-North Syracuse squad 6-0 yesterday at CNS.
Sara Mancuso, Vicki Race, and Chrissy Abare had the only Buc hits.
MacKenzie King and Ashlee Wapen shared the pitching duties.
Oswego will not play again until after spring break.
The Oswego High School JV boys lacrosse team lost to a highly skilled Fayetteville Manlius 17 – 7 Tuesday.
Fayetteville Manlius shocked Oswego by jumping out to a quick 6 – 0 lead before Jeremy Purce found David Mathes cutting to the goal for the Bucs (1-1) first score of the game.
Oswego pressed hard to get back into the game, but the deficit proved to be too great.
David Mathes did everything he could to bring the Buccaneers back scoring four goals in the game.
Jonathon Kaplewicz scored two goals and Kaleb Astoria also chipped in a goal.
Dan Maniccia assisted on two goals and Purce finished with one assist.
Matt Skinner did his best to keep Oswego in the game making 13 saves.
