OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Lady Bucs tennis team chalked up its third win of the season while Colin Morgan and Mackenzie Robinson paced the cross country team.
Oswego swimmers already have placed seven girls with sectional qualifying times.
Meanwhile, the Buc varsity football team lost to Mexico and the jayvees won their second gridiron contest of the year.
Canale Leads Lady Bucs
Oswego Lady Bucs tennis improved its record to 3-2 in league play and moved to 3-3 overall with a 5-2 decision over Central Square.
Coach James Hartmann said, “Dominque Canale extended her consecutive games won streak to 24 games in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Kelsey Thibault in the first singles.â€
Third singles Chelsea Geroux also won 6-2, 6-3 over Chelsea Mahaffy while second singles Aubree Schrader lost to Madison Perkins 6-2 and 6-3 after winning the first set 7-5.
Oswego captured three of the four doubles. Sarah Mancuso and Allison Yule won first doubles over Jessica Root and MacKenzie Ruffels 6-3, 6-1 while Alison Knight and Ashley Deveaney won 6-3, 6-3 over Kristen Stewart and Emily Nelson.
Fourth doubles, Rebecca Krass and Cathryn Darling won 6-2, 6-2 over Sara Firnstein and MaKenzi Berg.
The third doubles of Tayler Bowman and Casey Caroccio lost to Allie Ford and Jordan House after winning 6-0 lost the next two sets 6-3 and 7-5.
Morgan Leads Buc Runners
The Oswego High School cross country team headed to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill for the annual invitations as the boys were paced by Colin Morgan who earned a solid 34th place.
Oswego finished 11th in the 15 team field as all of the Bucs placed within the top seventy-five.
Earning ribbons for their performances, along with Morgan were, Mitch Rabalais (61st), Austin DeMott (64th), Jake Annal (72nd), and Jimmy Dillon (73rd).
Coach Dan Greene said, “Each Buc runner was able to pass competitors before they crossed the finish line. It was a great display of good finishing kicks by the athletes. The JV boys, varsity girls and JV girls all raced to the finish line. I was really proud of their efforts.â€
The JV boys finished in this order: DiVita, DiFabio, LiVoti and Billy Crist.
The varsity girls were led by ribbon winner Mackenzie Robinson who placed 25th. Kaela Shafer also got a ribbon as she ran well in the varsity race.
Shafer was up to the varsity challenge as she moved up from jayvee.
The jayvee girls earned ribbons as Meg LiVoti and Jessica Thompson ran well.
The Oswego High School Lady Bucs swim team kicked off the new season with a 54-40 loss to Baldwinsville.
Despite the loss seven Lady Bucs swam well enough to earn a berth in the Section III sectional competition.
Coach Josh Lerch said, “Although we didn’t have enough to win this meet the girls swam well and it was a great first meet for us.â€
Seniors Michaela Auer and Mara Parker, both won an event separately as Michaela won the 100 breast in 1:11.62 and Mara the 500 free in 5:45.43. They also placed first and second in the 50 free as Mara just edge Michaela with the winning time 26.71 and second 26.7.
Two newcomers to the team, eighth grader Mayra Lopez and freshman Colleen Frazer also swam very well in qualifying for the sectionals. Lopez placed second in the 200 free with a 2:143.01 and Frazer was fourth in the 100 breast in 1:20.28.
Lerch said, “This was definitely a good first meet for us against a good tam. We trained hard as a team and it’s always tough to go into a meet without a member who is sick or inured. If we can get the entire team healthy we should be very competitive.â€
Mexico Upends Buc Football
It was a perfect night for high school football as Mexico headed west to Oswego on Friday to meet the host Buccaneers.
It was not only a perfect night to play, but the Mexico Tigers played nearly perfect and capped off the night with a 48-13 victory.
Oswego trailed early, but came back with a late first half touchdown as Chris Pike hit Dom Cianfarano for an eight yard scoring strike in the waning seconds to close the halftime deficit to 28-6.
The Bucs received the ball at the start of the second half and hoped to trim the gap to two touchdowns, but were unable to muster an offensive drive on the possession.
However, the Buc defense tightened up in the third quarter and limited the visitors to a lone touchdown.
In the fourth quarter the Tigers got off to a sensational start with a 94 yard touchdown run by Austin LaBoeuf.
Oswego retaliated and gutted out a drive which left the fans without any fingernails. Oswego fought and drove and didn’t give up. On the three yard line on a fourth down the tip play that gets worked on in practice day after day paid off. Pike gunned the ball as he was hit and the pigskin deflected off fingertips of one Buc, but was hauled in by Tyler Lisec who put the second Buc touchdown on the board.
Dan Ellingwood kicked for the extra point to account for the 13th point.
Jayvee Football Team Wins Again
The Oswego jayvee football team got locked up in a tight game with Mexico and walked off the field with a 34-32 victory for its second win of the season.
Oswego held a 13-6 lead after one and 27-20 at intermission. Mexico came back to trail 27-26 with one quarter remaining, but each team scored in the final with Oswego converting the extra point for the two-point win.
Quarterback Dave Culeton had two completions for 38 yards and a touchdown. Logan Krass had one catch for 29 yards and a score while Ryan Lavner had a catch for nine yards.
On the ground Brent Denny had 73 yards and two touchdowns while Fred Ferguson had 71 yards and one TD. Ryan Lavner also earned 39 yards on the day. Devlin Babcock hit 4×5 points after.
Defensively, Trey Love had eight tackles, Garrett Skinner had six tackles while getting five each were Joe Ruggio, Lee Williams and Andrew Hall. Hall also had a sack and two forced fumbles. Adam Doviak had four tackles and forced two fumbles.
Jake Merrill and Robert Zeigler each had four tackles. Kyle Clark followed with a fumble recovery while Colten Dryden had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Liam Mahaney picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.
