OHS Sports: Swimmers Dunk C-NS, Volleyball Teams Stay Unbeaten

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego swimmers ended a long losing streak against C-NS while the girls volleyball teams remained unbeaten.

Runners and boys volleyball performed solidly in the latest Oswego High School sports results.

Swimmers Dunk C-NS

Oswego swimming coach Josh Lerch said prior to the meet against Cicero-North Syracuse, “We have been getting closer and closer to them since I’ve been coaching. Maybe tonight will be the night.”

It was “the night” for the Oswego Lady Bucs as they won 95-86 over the visiting NorthStars.

Lerch said, “We had a great first meet against Baldwinsville last week, but this one was much more impressive. We’ve not beaten CNS in a dual meet in the six seasons that I’ve been the coach of this team. We swam very well from top to bottom. This meet wasn’t won with first place finishes, but the depth that followed them. From eighth graders to seniors, we came out on top because of our second, third and fourth place finishes.”

Seniors Michaela Auer and Mara Parker led the way with two individual victories, in addition to playing a part in all three relays putting up the fastest time. Michaela won the 200 I.M in 2:24.64 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.57.  Mara won the 50 free in 26.61 and the 100 free in 58.35.

Freshman diver Hailey Ihlow had an outstanding meet placing second in the diving competition with an impressive score of 1:63.35, nearly 40 points higher than her best score as an eighth grader.

Eighth grader Mayra Lopez also had an outstanding meet.

She swam a lifetime best every time she dove in the water.

From the 2:11.68 that earner her second in the 200 free, to the 1:01.10 that earned her third in the 100 free (missing second by a .10 of a second), to her split of 27.68 on the 200 free relay that helped earn her team first in the event.

She is only two meets into her rookie year and she has four more years to go.

Lerch noted, “I said before that this meet was won by our depth… basically consisting of the other 22 girls on our team, other than Michaela and Mara who placed first in their events. I could put together a long list of all those girls who shined today, but instead I will say that we came in to the meet today as a tough, unified team of 24 athletes, and we left with a win because of our cohesive strength and determination.”

Lady Bucs Remain Volleyball Unbeaten

The Oswego Volleyball team traveled to Nottingham and defeated the Bulldogs 25-9, 25-5, and 25-10.

Oswego is now 6-0 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Coach Ron Ahart said, “We’ve used a very balance attack and have gotten many of the players’ valuable playing time over the past few matches when we have played less experienced teams. Hopefully it will pay off in our tougher matches and tournaments that are coming up.”

Laura Naron (5 kills) was Oswego’s leading hitter on the night followed by Kelsey Ross (4 kills), Jasmine Davis (4 kills), Cortnie Purce (4 kills) and Cydney Ward (4 kills).  Krisi Stemple (21 assists) set the hitters with various sets keeping the Bulldogs off balance.

Oswego also kept Nottingham in check with a strong service.

Ward (8 aces), Davis (7 aces), and Purce (4 aces) led the Lady Bucs. Mary Montagnola and Maggie Mooney led the team defensively.

Buc Golfers Stung By Bees

The Oswego High School golf team lost a highly contested match on Tuesday to an experienced B-Ville team at the difficult Radisson Greens Golf Club in Baldwinsville.

Playing the front side at Radisson, all eight Oswego golfers were unable to break 40 on this day. Baldwinsville, meanwhile, carded 4 sub-40 rounds on their home course and the Bees were able to buzz by the Bucs by a final count of 196-217.

Brandon Tracz fired the lowest nine-hole round for Oswego, a score of 41 on the tricky nine-hole layout. Tracz, a freshman this season, has been a key contributor this year for the team. In only his second year as a varsity golfer, he has quietly maintained the fourth lowest scoring average on the team this season. His overall stroke average of 42.4 ranks fourth on the team.

Also scoring in this match were teammates Sam Lalonde (42), Matt Lloyd (44), Colin Joyce (44), and Luke Boshart (46).

Oswego’s next match will take place on Friday at home versus C-S Green.

Oswego is now 6-3 overall this season and 1-2 in league play.

Volleyball Season Continues

Oswego boys’ varsity volleyball players lost to Cicero-North Syracuse 25-14, 26-28, 25-19, 25-17 at the NorthStars court.

Coach Mike Shea said, “This is the first match where we were able to run a really effective middle attack. Both of our starting middle hitters had good nights. Also, in the past this is a team where guys might have folded after starting out poorly. These guys fought back to take the second game after not playing well at all in the first game.”

Continuing he said, “Games three and four were really closer than the score indicates. In both of those games CNS had one serving run where they scored 7 straight. If we can limit the big runs, we can beat the best team in the league.”

Runners Strong Against Dogs

Despite some solid individual efforts the cross country teams lost to Nottingham with the boys on the short end of an 18-42 count and the girls losing a tight 25-30 meet.

Colin Morgan led three Buc runners in the top ten as Morgan ran to a fourth place finish for the second straight dual meet. Mitch Rabalais (sixth), Austin DeMott (ninth), ran well over a very hilly course.

Jake Annal (eleventh), and Jimmy Dillon (twelfth) were within seconds of placing in the top ten.

Jon Mahan was close behind in thirteenth as he competed in his first varsity race. Then there were three Buc runners crossing in seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth. They were in order, Matt DiFabio, Alex Shannon and Andy DiVita. Closely behind that pack of OHS harriers were Steve LiVoti and Bill Crist.

Again the Oswego runners displayed good finishing kicks as they were not passed by the opposing runners in the last 100 meters of the race.

Coach Dan Greene said, “The boys are finishing very strong. I would like to see them improve their middle part of their race. If they can do that, they would each finish one or two places better in our next dual meet.”

The varsity girls were led by race winner Mackenzie Robinson. Last week Mackenzie lost by a mere two seconds, and this week she finished well ahead of the second place runner.

Greene said, “Mackenzie led from start to finish. She ran a well balanced race – she was under control the whole way.”

The next Lady Buc runners were Mikayla Place and Meg LiVoti as they finished fifth and sixth place.

Kaela Shafer (running with a painful heel) was next in eighth place followed by a strong finish by Jessica Thompson.

The boys and girls will compete in the Baldwinsville Invitational on Saturday.

Jayvee Volleyball Victory

The Oswego High School jayvee volleyball team defeated Nottingham 25-12 and 27-25.

Coach Ted Beers said, “We did not play the aggressive game we needed to play.  We squeezed out a win in two sets, but we did not play the speed of a game we need day in and day out.  The second set showed that our game had slowed down.  We have to increase our speed so we are better prepared.”

Mikayla Allen had a kill and two aces while Emilee Anderson had two aces. Erica Atkins finished with two kills and Brooke Broadwell had one.

Madi Collins chalked up two assists while Alexa Healy had a kill, three aces and three assists. Mackenzie King had two aces while Molly Malone had two kills and a point block.
