OSWEGO, NY – Oswego volleyball has advanced to the New York state Tournament while other OHS squads have been in action this week with many seniors winding down their career as Bucs.
Lady Bucs Volleyball Awaits States
The Oswego High School girls’ varsity volleyball team has qualified for the New York state Tournament as the Section III Class A champion.
Oswego will play at Union College on Nov. 13.
In the final home game of the season the Bucs captured the American Division Title in the Central New York Counties League with an 8-4 league mark and 11-5 overall as Oswego scored a sweep of Central Square.
The Bucs won 25-16, 25-15 and 25-20 to close out the regular season.
It was also senior night as Jasmine Davis, Krisi Stemple and Laura Naron played their final regular season game in the confines of Powers Gymnasium.
Talking about his seniors Coach Ron Ahart said, “There’s not a more dedicated group. They just love the game of volleyball and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of seniors and senior captains.”
In the finale Davis had eight kills and five digs while Stemple added 28 assists along with four kills, two digs and an ace.
Naron finished with four digs and two kills. Kelsey Ross finished the night with 10 kills and eight digs while Cydney Ward had eight kills, three point blocks and two aces.
Emily Barlow added an ace and three digs while Maggie Mooney had two aces, Rebecca Martin two kills and a point block and Mary Montagnola nine digs.
Varsity Soccer Senior Night
Nine Oswego varsity soccer players competed on the Turrill Street field for the final time in their career in a 3-2 loss to Nottingham.
Rainy and cold conditions made for a tough night for both teams, but the emotions of the night kept everyone focused on the game as the seniors were wearing the Buc blue and white for the final time.
Prior to the game the parents were welcomed on the field to join their son. This year’s senior class includes Tim Dougherty, Tim Hanisch, Max Sokolovsky, David Peel, David Caramella, Andrew Michaud, Stephen Auyer, Bill Clary and Jacob Orta.
Oswego and Nottingham battled one another and with 19:50 left in the game when Nicephone Ndmura scored in a scramble in front of the net for what proved to be the gamer.
The Bucs closed the deficit to 3-2 with just under eight minutes remaining. Orta scored off a throw in from Auyer. However, the Bucs never managed the equalizer.
The visitors were up 2-0 after the first half of play, but the Bucs scored with just over 34 minutes left when Auyer connected on a penalty kick.
The goal gave Auyer 43 in his career as a Buc and thus became the all-time leading scorer in Oswego soccer history.
Goalie Matt Skinner finished with 14 saves for the Bucs while the Bulldog keeper, Bior Ajak, had 10 stops for the 8-7 Nottingham team.
Oswego closed out the season with a 4-10-1 record and did not qualify for post season play.
Lady Bucs Score Victory
Oswego moved to 6-8-1 in varsity girls’ soccer action with a 2-1 win over Nottingham.
The teams battled to a 1-1 deadlock at halftime, but the Bucs scored in the second half for the win.
Kaitlyn Armstrong and Kayla Sharkey scored for the Bucs while Jodi Kester assisted on both goals.
In the net Jamie Bouffard stopped seven shots.
Earlier in the week Oswego lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to a solid CNS team.
Kayla Sharkey scored first about half way through the first half. CNS evened the game with about 4 minutes left in the half.
The game remained 1-1 until 2 minutes left in regulation and a CNS player broke free for breakaway and scored the game winner.
“It was tough way to lose but I was proud how the girls bounced back after a poor performance over the weekend,” their coach said.
Swimmers Battle FM
Scores: 102 – 83
The Lady Bucs swam an outstanding meet against Fayetteville-Manlius.
Oswego led the meet through the first six events before the F-M Hornets started to chip away at that lead.
Leading the Bucs was senior Michaela Auer who was a double winner, placing first in both the 200 I.M. (2:23.59) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.73).
Seniors Mara Parker and Haley Annal each turned in the top time in an event. Parker placed first in the 50 freestyle in 26.27 and Annal took top honors in the 100 fly in a season best time of 1:07.60.
Also turning in some exceptional swims for the Bucs were: senior Meredith Moshier swimming her best 100 fly this season in 1:15.26, junior Michaela Kearns swimming her fastest 500 free this season (6:14.86) and qualifying for Sectionals, sophomore Chrissy Abare swimming her fastest in-season time ever in the 200 free (2:09.44), freshman Catie Geroux swimming her fastest 50 free (29.91) and 100 fly (1:16.19) this season, freshman Cassidy Taylor swimming her fastest 50 free this season (29.57), freshman Katrina Tafler swimming her lifetime best in the 200 I.M. (2:49.50), freshman Liz Baker and Danielle Boyzuck swimming their lifetime bests in the 100 free going 1:08.76 and 1:12.98 respectively.
Eighth graders Brenna Riley and Mayra Lopez also excelled at the meet with Brenna just narrowly missing Sectionals in the 200 freestyle (2:18.36) and swimming lifetime best in the 100 fly (1:17.36), and Mayra swimming a lifetime best in the 500 free (5:57.00).
Coach Josh Lerch said, “As you can see by the abundance of results overhead, this was a good meet for us. We had a pretty tough week of training under our belts before this meet and I can’t wait to see what this team does when we start resting for Sectionals soon.”
Football Closes Out Season
The Oswego High School football team closed out the season with a crossover game against New Hartford.
New Hartford built up a 29-0 halftime lead behind a strong running game and eventually finished with a 41-0 season ending victory over the Bucs.
