OSWEGO, NY – Oswego varsity teams regular seasons are over while the modified teams also winding down the schedule.
Sectionals are on deck this week for the Bucs. On Monday the Section III Class A boys’ tennis preliminary round was held at Syracuse University Skytop Courts and on Tuesday the tennis players who advance vie at the same site in the title and consolation rounds.
In baseball the Bucs will be playing on Tuesday in the Class AA game at DeLutis Field at 5 p.m. The Bucs were seeded number ten and will face host, and seventh seed, Rome Free Academy in the first round. Winner advances to the quarterfinal round on Thursday at second seeded Auburn at 5 p.m.
On Wednesday the Section III Class AA boys’ track and field competition will be held beginning at 4 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Thursday the Section III Class A girls’ golf sectionals are set for 8 a.m. at Rouges Roost while the boys’ golvers will be in the Section III state qualifier at Colgate University. The girls’ track team will also be in action at the Class AA sectionals on the CNS track beginning at 4 p.m.
Friday the Oswego Lady Bucs softball team will host either number ten seeded Henninger or seventh seeded Auburn at 5 p.m. at the OHS softball field. Later that evening the third seeded Lady Bucs lacrosse team will face off against second seeded East Syracuse-Minoa at 7 p.m. at Henninger High School in the Section III Class B lacrosse semifinals.
Softball Finishes Strong
The OHS softball team closed out its season with a convincing 10-5 victory over West Genesee on Friday.
Oswego trailed 1-0 until the home half of the third inning when pitcher Emily Kolenda led off with a booming triple to right field. Consecutive hits by Jessica Slight, Allie Yule, Michele Canale, Devynn Wilder and Morgan Lavner, followed by a sacrifice fly by Erica Lazzaro made it 6-1 Oswego.
The Lady Bucs added four insurance runs in the fifth with Lavner and Taylor Maas each driving in a run and Lazzaro plating two more with a long triple.
Kolenda got the start in the circle for the Bucs. She gave up a dozen hits, but made some key pitches when she needed them, according to Coach Mike McCrobie.
“Emily hasn’t pitched a lot of game innings lately because Laura Miceli has become our workhorse, so it was good to get Em out there for a complete game against a very good hitting West Genesee lineup,†McCrobie said.
Leading Oswego’s 12-hit attack were Marissa Canale, Michele Canale, Lavner and Kolenda with two hits apiece. Lazzaro, Yule, Wilder, and Slight added one each.
The win moves Oswego to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the league – good enough for the CNYCL title.
Four Golfers Headed to Sectionals
With the end of another school year approaching, spring sport sectional competition is in the air, and four Oswego golfers will take to the course in their quest to qualify for state contests later next month.
On the girls’ side, senior Rachel Baxter has played well enough this season to earn a place alongside some 45 female golfers competing for a spot on this year’s Section III State Team.
Rachel will tee it up on Thursday at Rogues Roost Golf Club in North Syracuse and only the top eight scorers will advance to state play at Foxfire later in the month.
This is Baxter’s first attempt at qualifying, but her hopes are high.
“If I can stay focused for 18 holes and stay hydrated, I’m sure I’ll do just fine,†Baxter commented after a three-hour Monday practice session that concluded with four buckets of balls on the Oswego Country Club driving range.
This year’s boys’ state qualifier is also being held on Thursday, but the boys will compete in Hamilton at the Seven Oaks Golf Club on the Colgate Campus. Seven Oaks, the traditional site for the Section III boys’ state qualifier, will give this year’s competitors all they can handle—the long, tight fairways and undulating, speedy greens have been known to wreak havoc with even the best young ball strikers in the region.
Representing Oswego in the qualifying tournament on Thursday will be senior captains and All-League selections Scott Quenville and Corey Schuffenecker, and sophomore sensation Sam LaLonde.
These three golfers qualified for this elite event in the fall at Green Lakes Golf Course.
The boys have all been working hard at Oswego Country Club over the past few weeks, priming their games for battle. If they survive the first day cut on Thursday, the boys will be tested again on Saturday – same course, different pins and tees.
Modified Lacrosse Plays Well
The Modified Lady Bucs defeated the Auburn White team 11-6 on their home field Monday.
Goalies Mykayla Allen and Carrie Yurkon each turned back 5 shots in the win.
A balanced attack led the way for the visiting Bucs as Allison Hare led the way with three goals and an assist.
Sydney Knight scored two goals and added an assist, and Devin Higgins scored twice.
Also scoring were Erika Atkins, McKenna Bahner, Morgan Hillman and Julia Lavery.
Adding assists were Brenna Sherman, Morgan Cook, and Morgan Hillman.
The Bucs close out the season Wednesday with a home date against Central Square.
The game is at the Oswego Middle School at 4 p.m.
Oswego came back to defeat the pesky Henninger Black Knights 8-4.
Oswego dominated the first half of play outscoring the host 4-0. Henninger played the Bucs even over the final 25 minutes, but it was not enough as Oswego escaped with its fifth win of the year.
Scoring for Oswego were Allison Hare with three goals and Ericka Atkins one goal, Sydney Knight one goal and one assist, and Morgan Cook scored twoi goals. Morgan Hillman chipped in a goal and Kara Collins added an assist to some tough defensive play.
Boys’ Modified Lacrosse Wins Again
Oswego dominated Nottingham 14-1.
Ryan Martin scored four goals and added four assists in an eight point outing while Brandon Tracz finished with seven points behind four goals and three assists.
John Buske had a goal and assist.
Mitch Schrader chalked up two assists. Zach Zerrahn, Matt Wise, Brian Williams, Zach Crisafulli and Shane Bowman added one goal each.
Strong defense was turned in by Adam Doviak, Max Torbitt, Jordan Sherman, Jake Rodriguez and Jake Cary.
Trey Love had five saves and Hunter Izyk added three saves.
Oswego led 8-0 at the end of first quarter and all goals were assisted as Martin and Tracz scored seven goals and assisted on six goals.
The Bucs also won 11-5 over Central Square.

Shane Bowman Ben Annal, Brandon Tracz and Jon Buske each added a goal.
Zach Crisafulli, Nick Reiner, Dalton Tracy, Justin Canale and Greg Mayer played strong at the midfield position.
Trey Love five saves and Hinter Izyk added three saves in goal for the 9-0 Bucs.
Mod Softball Wins
Oswego modified softball team hosted at Legends Field and came away with an 6-2 win over Baldwinsville.
Allison Batchelor pitched a solid seven inning game allowing only two runs on eight hits.
She struck out five batters walked one.
Carrie Kelly played extremely well behind the plate.
Oswego made several fine defensive plays to keep the runners from scoring.
Oswego’s Jordan McCauley led off the game with a single. She stole second and was advanced to third by a single from Sam Cutro. Carrie Kelly reached on a hit and scored Jordan.
In the second inning Brooke Broadwell reached on a single and stole second. She then scored on another hit by Jordan.
In the third inning Molly Malone walked and Sam Cutro bunted her to second. Carrie Kelly hit a double which scored two runs.
In the fifth inning Carrie Kelly singled and advanced to second on a bunt by Nora Culeton. Brooke Broadwell bunted and scored Carrie.
In the sixth Sage Dudley reached on a hit, was moved to second on a bunt by Caroline Dougherty. She stole third and came in to score on a single by Tara Lagoe.
