The Oswego varsity boys soccer continued its successful start to the season defeating Watertown IHC 5-1 at the Oswego Middle School on Thursday afternoon.
The game did not start well for the Bucs as they gave up a goal just 5:31 into the contest.
Coach Don Fronk said, “I think the early goal was a result of having played the night before, it took us a little while to get our legs underneath us and get into the flow of the game.”
Once the Bucs settled down and began to move the ball they put a lot of pressure on the IHC goal. That pressure paid off as Patrick Holland played a ball to Stephen Auyer who found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 with 24:22 gone in the first half. Just under four minutes later Nate Pacheco slid a ball through the middle of the field to Auyer who raced in on the IHC goalie. Auyer calmly maneuvered around the keeper and placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead. With roughly 4:30 to go to halftime Ricky Wallace found Aaron Marsallo with a pass, Marsallo buried the ball in the goal to give the Buc’s a 3-1 going into halftime.
The second half began much better than the first for Oswego as just 10:53 into the half Aaron Marsallo sent a crossing ball into the box where Auyer headed it home to provide the Bucs with a 4-1 margin. David Caramella rounded out the scoring as he knocked home a goal off a pass from Antonio Darling with just 12 seconds remaining in the game to provide the final 5-1 margin of victory.
Fronk said, “Our defensive unit of Wes Ihlow, Joe Hart, Jeff Schmidt, Jamie Reynolds and Brandon DeSantis was again solid in the back. Goalie Josh Baer made 6 saves in 70 minutes of work, while Goalie Matt Skinner finished out the final 10 minutes but did not need to make a save in that amount of time.”
The coach continued, “Other than the first 15 minutes of the game, we played the type of soccer that will allow this team to be successful this season. The boys fought through a tough start and settled themselves down to pull out the win today.”
Oswego’s next game is Tuesday Sept. 15th at Liverpool at 4:30.
