A strong Oswego surge after the half helped to regain the lead and put away the pesky Auburn Maroons. After trailing 8-6, the Lady Bucs scored five straight goals to open the half. Oswego (3-0) regained the lead and kept it even after a late Auburn (1-3) surge.
Amanda D’Amico and Maia Czarnecki led the way for Oswego with four goals apiece. The two seniors combined for all six of Oswego’s first half points.
Auburn’s Nicole Shattinger helped to build the lead as she scored all four of her goals in the first half. Kim Neagle, Christine Desocio, Margaret Lewis, and Abby Valentino each netted a goal to help expand the Maroon’s lead to 8-6 at the half.
Oswego had trouble connecting on passes in the first half. Auburn took advantage of the Bucs’ mishaps and outshot them 20 to 8 and seemed to be in control of the match.
The Lady Bucs found the back of the net just two minutes into the second half as Taylor Giglio scored on an assist from D’Amico. Kaitlin Armstrong tied the game 8-8 just two minutes later off a free possession goal. D’Amico then put Oswego in the lead with her fourth goal of the game. Czarnecki and Sam McCarrick would each add another goal to cap off a 5 – 0 run that lasted nearly 12 minutes.
The Maroons would come storming back grabbing three goals of their own. Lewis and Desocio fired in a goal each to bring the score within one, 11-10. At the 7:30 mark Taylor Sinicropi tied the game as she snuck a goal near side on an assist from Lewis.
In a game of runs the Bucs were not to be outdone as they netted two more goals. Giglio put Oswego up one and Leah Folgherait made a nifty juke move to score with just under 5 minutes left, to put them up 13-11.
Auburn’s Desocio scored her third goal of the game with 1:23 left to play. The Maroons won the ensuing face-off but Oswego’s D’Amico stole the ball. It looked like Oswego was going to be able to run out the clock but an errant pass gave Auburn one more chance. But an Oswego foul let time expire before the Maroons were able to get a shot off and the game ended 13-12 in favor of the Bucs.
Oswego goalie Taylor Bowman was key in the victory as she made 13 saves and helped spearhead a much more inspired Buc defense in the second half.
“I think that there were high emotions with this game because, you know, we see them later in the season and in the league. I expected it to be close, Auburn is a good team,†said Oswego coach Laura Burger.
Oswego looks to go 4-0 on the season as they clash with Liverpool on Friday at 7 p.m. at Solvay high school.
