OSWEGO, NY – Another full week of sports action got under way on Monday with the Lady Buc softball team winning in shutout fashion while the track team along with baseball squad had outstanding performances.
Miceli Pitches Lady Bucs To Win
Laura Miceli pitched shutout ball while backed by solid defense in a 2-0 victory over Baldwinsville on Monday.
The Oswego Bucs were locked up with the Bees in a scoreless tussle, but in the last of the sixth numbers suddenly went on the scoreboard.
Devyn Wilder started out the inning with a walk and then Morgan Lavner laid down a bunt and a defensive miscue kept two Oswego runners on base. Emily Kolenda hit a bouncer to the left side of the infield and both runners scored for the lone runs of the day.
Oswego mustered just two hits against B’ville pitcher Liz Campbell, but had an advantage of three Bee errors while playing errorless ball.
Oswego moved the record to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in league action while the Bees fell to 1-2 in league and 3-4 overall.
Relay Runs Rampant For Lady Bucs
The Oswego High School girl’s track team lost a tough 69-62 decision Monday to the visiting Lady Cougars of Corcoran.
Oswego’s 4 x 100 meter relay of Vanessa Sheffield, Eliza Parker, Alexis Files, and Whitney Ford, turned in an outstanding performance during the meet, with a winning time of 51.8, a time that currently ranks them second in the section.
Other firsts for the Lady Bucs were earned by Files, with a best of 1:09.4 in the 400 meter hurdles, Parker in the 100 meter hurdles (16.3), Bridgette Auyer in the 800 meter run (3:03.9), and Sheffield in the long jump (16’6″) and triple jump, with an fine jump of 34′.
Parker also earned second place in the 100 meter dash (13.4) and 200 meter dash (27.7) for Oswego, with freshmen Leah Weiss finishing second in the 800 meter run and 1500 meter run.
Other seconds included Carlie Fredette, with a best in the 400 meter dash, Michelle Champagne in the 3000 meter run, Aryelle Caruso in the discus, and Ford in the long jump.
Alexis Files placed third in the triple jump with a best and finished second in the 200 meter dash.
Other thirds for the Lady Bucs included Cali Harrington, with a best in the shot put, Whitney Ford in the 100 meter dash, Cydney Ward in the 400 meter dash, Karly Babcock in the discus, Paige Gray, with a best in the 800 meter run, and Emily Henderson in the high jump.
Other Lady Bucs turning in personal best efforts were Mackenzie Bisnett, Xiaphan Li, Pia Steiner, and Kaleigh Fitzsimmons.
Oswego will return to action on Thursday, traveling to Syracuse, to compete against the strong Lady Wildcats of West Genesee.
Solid Efforts In Boy’s Track
The Oswego varsity boys track team lost to a very good Corcoran team 91-50 on Monday in Oswego.
“Corcoran had many athletes who are in the top 10 of their events in Section III,†Oswego coach Erwin Dewey said.
Oswego’s Eli Tyler won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 60.0. He also finished third in the triple jump (37’ 4.5â€).
Cory Keefe won the 110-meter hurdles with his fastest time of the season, 16.3. He also placed second in the 100-meter dash (11.6) and the 200-meter dash (23.8).
“He continues to be one of the top athletes on the team,†Dewey said.
Freshman Dylan Lavner won the high jump with his best effort of the season, clearing 5’ 10â€.
Oswego’s 4 x 100-meter relay continued its unbeaten streak with a winning time of 46.2. Running on the relay were Keefe, Dan Cirino, Brent Denny, and Ryan Jock.
Zach McQuaid finished second in the 1,600 meters and the 800 meters as he remains consistent this season.
Cody Sivils finished a close second in the 3,200 meters as he continues to improve.
Mike Ruggio placed second in the shot put (39’ 8â€), and Mitch Maniccia placed second in the discus with a season-best distance of 116’ 3â€.
Colin Morgan finished third in the 1,600 meters with his best time, and he also took third in the 3,200 meters. Miguel Vazquez continues to improve his time in the 400-meter dash. He was timed in 55.4 to finish third in the event.
Dewey said Jock did a nice job, taking third in the 200-meter dash (24.7) and the long jump (18’ 9â€) as he continues to improve.
Ruggio placed third in the discus (112’ 10â€), Maniccia was third in the shot put (38’ 10â€), and Alejandro Lara placed third in the pole vault.
The Oswego varsity boys’ team will host the Oswego County Invitational on Friday at Erwin “Jeep†Dewey Track at Oswego Middle School.
Bucs No-Hit in One-Run Loss
The pitchers went toe to toe in the Oswego-Baldwinsville varsity baseball game and when the game was over Oswego had lost a tough 1-0 decision to the Bees.
Bo Watson pitched a no-hitter for Baldwinsville while Shane Demo hurled a five-hitter for the Bucs.
Baldwinsville scored the only run in the bottom of the second inning and it was all either team could muster against tough pitching and solid defense.
Watson, en route to his no-hitter, fanned 11 and walked just two while for the Bucs Demo allowed one walk and struck out one Bee.
Softball Loss
The girls’ jayvee softball team lost to a very solid Baldwinsville team 7-3 in recent softball action.
B’ville plated four runs in the third inning to take control of the contest.
Caitlyn McRae doubled, while Mary Montagnola, Sara Mancuso, Isabella Winklestine, and Chrissy Abare all hit safely for the Bucs (0-3).
Oswego will travel to Utica on Wednesday.
Mod Girl’s Lacrosse Win
The Modified Lady Bucs opened the season with a 10-6 win over Henninger.
Leading the scoring for Oswego was Allison Hare one goal and three assists, Devin Higgins two goals, and Sydney Knight two goals.
Erika Atkins, Kellie Gorman, Morgan Hillman, Morgan Cook, and Kara Collins all chipped in with a goal.
Gabe Lombardo also had an assist.
A solid defensive effort was led by goalies Carrie Yurkon with three saves, and Mikayla Allen four saves.
In front of them, defenders Alexis Dingman, Jhannine Verceles, Courtney Osmun and Gabe Lombardo all played solid games.
The Bucs next face Auburn on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Wilber Field.
