Oswego State Men’s Basketball Defeats Oneonta

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated Oneonta by a score of 47-41 on Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the win, Oswego improves to 2-4 (1-1 SUNYAC) while Oneonta falls to 4-3 (1-2).

Josh Ivey and Tyler Pierre came up big for the Lakers down the stretch with 11 points between them to erase a six-point deficit with eight minutes remaining.

Oswego trailed 37-31 prior to the duo dominating inside late.

In the first five minutes, the teams alternated buckets as Tim Marshall opened the scoring with a pair of threes and Ian Schupp knocked down a jumper to help Oswego to an 8-6 lead in the early going.

Both teams were active on defense and the scoring was limited until freshman Liam Sanborn knocked down a three-pointer with five minutes left in the half to extend the Oswego lead to 16-12. Oneonta countered with 12-0 run on a trio of layups, a three-pointer, and a three-point play to open up a 24-16 lead at the half.

Oneonta held a 30-20 rebounding edge and outshot the Lakers 29-percent to 20-percent in the first half.

Just like the first half, both teams traded three-point baskets to open the half as Jamir Ferebee sandwiched a pair around two Oneonta triples.

A Brandan Gartland triple at the 12-minute mark cut the Oneonta lead to 32-25.

At the 8:37 mark, the scoring started to pick up as Sanborn hit a three to cut the lead to 34-28. Oneonta answered with a three before Schupp hit one of his own to cut the lead to six with a little over seven minutes left.

A pair of Ivey freethrows and an Oneonta turnover gave the Lakers a put-back basket that cut the lead to two at 37-35.

Pierre would tie the game up at 39 with four minutes left to play on a layup, assisted by Sanborn. With two minutes left, Sanborn secured loose rebound and was fouled on the play.

He coolly drained both ends of the one-and-one to put Oswego up 41-39. Oneonta answered with a layup before Pierre and John Ivey both converted at the basket to put the Lakers up 45-41 with 30 seconds to play.

A missed three by Oneonta and Ivey defensive rebound would secure the win.

It was a tale of two halves as Oswego outscored Oneonta 22-7 coming down the stretch in the last ten minutes of the game. Both teams played strong defense as Oswego held the Red Dragons to 24 percent while shooting only 27 percent themselves.

Oneonta held a small rebounding edge at 49-47.

Ivey led Oswego with nine points and six rebounds while Sanborn and Schupp each added eight points in the win. Pierre had a team-high 11 rebounds.

The team is back in action Friday as it travels to Buffalo State for a 7:30 p.m. start.
