The offense erupted for three goals in less than a minute en route to a five-goal second period as the Oswego State men’s ice hockey team defeated UW-Stevens Point, 6-1, in the third place game of the PathFinder Bank/Oswego Hockey Classic Friday afternoon. Ian Boots and Chris Laganiere tallied two goals apiece, while Jon Whitelaw recorded three assists and a goal as the Lakers improved to 13-2-0 overall. The Pointers fell to 5-10-0 on the season with the loss.
Neither squad lit the lamp in the first period, but it did not take long in the second period for Oswego State to get on the scoreboard as Boots recorded his first goal of the game 46 seconds into the frame. Assists were awarded to Whitelaw and Luke Moodie on the play. UW-Stevens Point had an answer, though, as Chade Boeckmann posted his third goal of the season by putting home a rebound after a shot by Harrison Niemann at the 2:01 mark. Boots scored the eventual game-winning goal when he ripped a wrist shot from the right face-off circle past Pointer netminder Randy Wilcott with assists going to Hank Van Boxmeer and Whitelaw at 7:20.
A UW-Stevens Point slashing penalty started the Oswego State scoring streak late in the period when Whitelaw got a piece of a shot from Kevin Huinink’s stick at the 18:00 mark. On the ensuing face-off, Moodie joined the scoring act after receiving a pass from Whitelaw and Boots. At 18:55 in the second period, Justin Fox fed Chris Laganiere the puck in a 2-on-1 situation to make the score 5-1.
The final Laker goal came at 16:49 in the third period when Laganiere scored his fourth goal of the year with assists going to Fox and Andrew Mather.
Oswego State outshot the Pointers by a margin of 40-27 as Laker goaltender Dan Jones compiled 26 saves. Randy Wilcott stopped 31 shots for UW-Stevens Point in 54:38, while Steve Hamilton made three saves in the final 5:22. Special teams was not a big part of the game as Oswego State went 1-for-5 on the power play and the Pointers went 0-for-1. Ian Boots and Chade Boeckmann were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Lakers will host Skidmore Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
