OSWEGO, N.Y. – Sophomore Ryan Purdy (Stormville, N.Y.) scored early in the second half to give the Oswego State men’s soccer team (1-7-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) a lead, but it was unable to hold on in a 1-1 tie against Potsdam (2-6-1, 0-1-1 SUNYAC) on Friday.
The Lakers dominated possession in the first half, keeping the ball in their offensive half for the better part of the opening stanza. Oswego State had better scoring opportunities, and also outshot the opposition, 11-4.
Just over seven minutes into the second half, a Bears defender misplayed a ball outside the box. Purdy collected the ball and took a shot at Potsdam goalie Joseph Glackin, who was charging hard. Glackin stopped the shot, but it got behind him and Purdy finished the play for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Potsdam knotted up the score in the 72nd minute when Ryan Jackson flicked a header across the box to the far right post. Eduardo Figueroa was right there to bury a shot for the Bears. Both teams battled until the end of regulation, but neither was able to find the net again and the game went to overtime.
The best scoring opportunity for either team came a few minutes into the second overtime, when freshman Patrick Sprague (Spencerport, N.Y.) used his wheels to get behind the defense on the left side of the field.
Sprague drove a low cross to the middle of the box where senior Mike Naab (Ontario, N.Y.) was waiting and struck the ball with solid contact. A sure goal was stopped by Glackin, who dove left to make an incredible save and preserve the tie.
Penalty kicks were used for playoff positioning, in which the Bears won 5-4.
Senior Pat Breen (Palmyra, N.Y.) finished the game with eight saves for the Lakers. Glackin stopped 11 shots for the Bears.
Oswego State will play its second contest of Alumni Weekend Saturday at 1 p.m. against rival Plattsburgh.
